Phone Assistance Not A Luxury

2021 Tax filing season begins February 12, 2021 TAX2Go, LLC.

With so many returns backed up at the IRS, it may be no surprise that the number of calls to the IRS and visits to its website jumped this year with the number of calls jumping to four times what the agency received in 2020, Collins said.

At the peak of the filing season this year, the IRS was receiving about 1,500 calls a second, Collins added.

The IRS couldn’t keep up with the demand, resulting in “historically poor service,” her report stated.

For instance, the toll-free number for individual income tax services received 85 million calls, but only 3% of callers reached a customer service rep, she noted. Collins also singled out the “Where’s my refund” tool on the IRS website as needing improvement, noting that in many cases the tool doesn’t provide an estimate of when a taxpayer might get their refund or explanation for the holdup.

“From the taxpayer’s perspective, the inability of the IRS to answer calls or provide answers causes frustration and undermines a fundamental taxpayer right namely, the right to be informed,” Collins said, adding that she urges Congress to increase funding for the IRS to improve its ability to answer and handle calls.

She added, “In my view, phone assistance is not merely an option or a luxury.”

What Is An Unrestricted Social Security Card How Can I Apply For It

Since the very start of the pandemic the IRS has been tasked with administrating many of the federal programmes aimed at providing financial relief to Americans.

The disruption of the past 15 months has made things difficult for the tax authority and has been forced to run at a limited capacity, while overseeing the stimulus check distribution and a busy tax season.

As such many are experiencing delays, with those expecting a tax refund being forced to wait months for the payment to come through. The IRS usually aims to issue a refund within 21 days of receiving a tax return but they suggest a number of potential reasons for a delay:

  • Filing includes errors, such as incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit
  • Incomplete return
  • Needs further review in general
  • Concerns about identity theft or fraud
  • Includes a claim filed for an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit
  • Includes a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, which can take up to 14 weeks to process

Bonus tax refund for unemployment benefits recipients

The IRS have a big job on their hands and they are not helped by a recent change to unemployment benefits that will see millions more people eligible for a tax refund. The American Rescue Plan changed the rules to give each individual filer a $10,200 tax-free unemployment benefits entitlement.

How to check on the status of a tax refund

When Will I Get My Tax Refund

The Wheres My Refund? tool lets you check the status of your refund through the IRS website or the IRS2Go mobile app. If you submit your tax return electronically, you can check the status of your refund within 24 hours. But if you mail your tax return, youll need to wait at least four weeks before you can receive any information about your tax refund. Keep in mind that usually you can file your taxes in January.

In order to find out the status of your tax refund, youll need to provide your Social Security number , filing status and the exact dollar amount of your expected refund. If you accidentally enter the wrong SSN, it could trigger an IRS Error Code 9001. That may require further identity verification and delay your tax refund.

Most taxpayers receive their refunds within 21 days. If you choose to have your refund deposited directly into your account, you may have to wait five days before you can gain access to it. If you request a refund check, you might have to wait a few weeks for it to arrive. The table below will give you an idea of how long youll wait, from the time you file, until you get your refund.

The Irs Is Still Processing Millions Of Returns From Utah And Every Other State

This Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019 file photo shows part of a 1040 federal tax form printed from the Internal Revenue Service website.

Its been almost four months since the filing deadline for your taxes, and you havent gotten your refund check yet.

Should you be worried? Not necessarily.

What should you do? Probably nothing.

What can you do? Probably nothing.

Are you alone? Absolutely not. According to the Internal Revenue Service, as of Sept. 4, there were still 8.5 million returns waiting to be processed.

The IRS has been working through a backlog of returns that need manual review. As of mid-June, it had received 152,465,000 returns and processed 141,032,000 of them. More than 104 million filers were issued refunds totaling almost $285.5 billion.

But youre wondering where your refund is and what happened to your return. Which, of course, you filed on or before May 17.

Returns are opened in the order theyre received. So if you didnt get yours in until that May 17 deadline, youre at the back of the line.

According to the IRS, it has been opening mail within normal time frames, and all the returns it received either electronically or by mail before April have already been processed if the return had no errors or did not require further review.

Yikes. Thats 3-4 months.

And if the IRS needs more information from you, youll get a letter. In the mail. Another added delay.

How Should I Contact The Irs For More Help

November 2021 Tax Refund Update | Explained by CPA

The IRS received 167 million calls this tax season, which is four times the number of calls in 2019. And based on the recent report, only 7 percent of calls reached a telephone agent for help. While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agency’s live phone assistance is extremely limited right now because the IRS says it’s working hard to get through the backlog. You shouldn’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

The IRS is directing people to the Let Us Help You page on its website for more information. It also advises taxpayers to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’re eligible for assistance by calling them: 877-777-4778.

Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Where’s My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. You can call: 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours.

The IRS usually sends out most refunds within three weeks, but sometimes it can take a bit longer if the return needs additional review.

The IRS’ refund tracker updates once every 24 hours, typically overnight. That means you don’t need to check your status more than once a day.

  • Factors That Can Affect Timing

Taxpayers can choose how they submit their tax return and how they want to receive their refund. How you choose to file your taxes will determine how quickly your return is processed.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to file their returns electronically and elect to receive their refunds via direct deposit. By doing so, you will likely get your refund faster than someone who submits a return by mail and requests a paper check.

This is especially true for the 2021 tax season because both the IRS and the U.S. Postal Service have been experiencing delays due to the 2020 economic crisis.

In some cases, you may receive your refund as a paper check even if you requested a direct deposit. According to the IRS, this could happen if:

    • You request that the refund be deposited electronically into an account owned by someone other than you or your spouse.
    • Your bank rejects the transaction.
    • You request that more than three electronic refunds be deposited into a single bank account.

This also happened to the filer mentioned above, who requested direct deposit. The reason, according to the IRS, was that we cant honor requests for direct deposit of refunds for prior years. Because it was a refund for 2019 taxes paid in 2021, the IRS had to send a check, even though the delay was the IRSs own and not the filers.

Your tax refund may be delayed if your return is incomplete, includes errors, was affected by fraud or identity theft, or requires further review.

Tax Returns Reflect Real Life Complications

Tax returns and tax refunds are complicated by real life situations grandparents raising grandchildren, people facing sizable drops in income during the pandemic, divorces that can complicate who claims a child as a dependent, newborns in 2020.

The IRS stated in early April mistakes are being made with the Recovery Rebate Credit, which is a new credit on 2020 returns.

The IRS is mailing letters to some taxpayers who claimed the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and may be getting a different amount than they expected.

The IRS issued 2.5 million letters relating to issues with the Recovery Rebate Credit by early April. That was 10.4% of almost 24 million individual e-filed tax returns received that claimed this credit, according to Garcia in Detroit.

What’s complicating the delays, of course, is that many people can’t get answers about what’s holding up their money.

Alexandria Gale who once spent 45 minutes on a call to the IRS where no one answered her call said she doesn’t know why her tax refund is delayed. She hasn’t received any letters from the IRS.

Gale, 26, and her husband Phillip Caudle, 24, welcomed the birth of their daughter Willow in 2020.

She works for United Wholesale Mortgage in Pontiac. He works for Coca-Cola as a sales rep.

She used TurboTax to file their 2020 federal income tax return electronically on March 4. But more than six weeks later, they’ve still not seen an expected tax refund of around $10,000.

Earned Income Tax Credit Has New Twist

Will The Stimulus Check Affect My Tax Return In 2021 ...

The Earned Income Tax Credit is a potential spot for errors. The credit has been used by ID thieves who file phony returns, so the IRS must work to detect fraud.

This tax season, the Earned Income Tax Credit can be claimed on a 2020 tax return based on someone’s 2019 or 2020 income this year. The new special provision was put into place when the second COVID-19 economic relief package was signed by President Donald Trump on Dec. 27.

Many people who lost jobs or saw reductions in pay in 2020 would have received far less EITC money if they could not take their 2019 earnings into account.

Williams, who worked as a babysitter in 2019 but didn’t work in 2020, is able to use her 2019 income to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit on the 2020 return, according to Brown, who is her tax preparer.

Her tax situation is complicated by the fact that she’s now claiming her granddaughter as a qualifying dependent in order to receive stimulus money for the child.

Amended returns for 2018 and 2019 were filed to claim the granddaughter as a dependent.

Brown said Williams meets all requirements to claim her granddaughter and the girl’s father did not file a tax return to claim her.

“She can prove residency through school records,” Brown said. “No one claimed her on their taxes.”

Brown said the 2020 refund for Williams should have been issued by mid-March or late March. The amended returns might take longer but he’s seeing delays there, too.

She has received no information from the IRS.
