How To Amend A Tax Return

Tax Tips & Information : How to File Taxes for Previous Years

Form 1040-X has three columns: A, B, and C. Under column A, the figure that was reported in the original or last-amended tax form is recorded. The taxpayer will need to input the adjusted or correct number in column C. The difference between columns A and C is reflected in column B. The adjustments made to a tax return will either result in a tax refund, balance due, or no tax change. The taxpayer also has to explain what changes they are making and the reasons for making each change in a section provided on the back of Form 1040-X.

How Long Do You Have To File An Amended Return

  • If you or the IRS changes your federal return, you must file an amended Virginia return within one year of the final IRS determination.
  • If you file an amended return with any other state that affects your Virginia income tax, you must file an amended Virginia return within one year.

Interest on any amount due will still accrue from the original due date, so file the corrected return as soon as you can.

You Forgot To Report Income From A Side Gig

You worked a side gig but had no idea you had to report the extra income on your federal income tax return. You went ahead and filed your taxes, but later you received a CP2000 notice from the IRS alerting you that the information the IRS has on file doesnt match what you reported on your tax return. In this case, you may have underpaid your taxes.

The notice shows the side gig income that you forgot to report. If the information in the CP2000 is correct, you dont need to amend your return unless you have additional income, credits or expenses to report.

In this case, you agree with the notice but also had expenses that need to be deducted. So youll have to file an amendment.

To deduct your side-gig expenses, fill out a Schedule C for the side gig and file a 1040X. You will also want to write CP2000 on top of your amended return, attach it to the response form, then mail it to the IRS.

Who Should File An Amended Return

Can I Refile My Taxes If I Forgot Something

All taxpayers are required to file their taxes annually for the previous tax year. Taxpayers may realize that they made a mistake in filling out their tax forms, or their circumstances may have changed after they have submitted or mailed a return that has been accepted by the government. If this occurs, the Internal Revenue Service has provided a way for these individuals to redo their taxes by providing an amended return form, Form 1040-X, on the IRS website.

An amended tax return can be filed even after the tax filing deadline for the tax year has passed.

Not all errors need amending by the form. A mathematical error, for example, will be spotted and corrected by the IRS when the initial tax return is sent in for processing. When this happens, any refund owed will be adjusted and any extra tax liability due will be billed to the taxpayer. In the event that the individual fails to include a required form or schedule in their submitted original tax return, the IRS will send a letter requesting that they mail the missing information to one of their offices.

Keep An Eye On The Calendar

Generally, the IRS audits only returns from the previous three tax years though there are major exceptions. So although it might be tempting to wait and see if the IRS will catch you in an error, it might be cheaper to fess up sooner rather than later.

The IRS charges interest and penalties on outstanding tax liabilities going all the way back to the original due date of the tax payment. So the longer you wait to fix a mistake, the more expensive that mistake can get.

Request Tax Documents From The Irs

Finding documents from previous years may be challenging for some. Thankfully, the IRS has a form you can fill out to request any tax information they have on file for you for a given year. Form 4506-T allows you to request a transcript of your tax return information, even if you haven’t filed a tax return. You can request information from the last 10 tax years.

The IRS will send the information it has on record, including information found on forms such as W-2s, 1099s, and 1098s. It won’t have information about deductions and credits you may qualify for, though, so you’ll still need to do some work on your own.

Collection And Enforcement Actions

Re

The return we prepare for you will lead to a tax bill, which, if unpaid, will trigger the collection process. This can include such actions as a levy on your wages or bank account or the filing of a notice of federal tax lien.

If you repeatedly do not file, you could be subject to additional enforcement measures, such as additional penalties and/or criminal prosecution.

When Should I File Form 1040x

The IRS says you probably need to amend your return if you made a mistake on your filing status, your income, deductions or credits on your original return. You should also amend your return if you need to:

Correct information on your Form 1040, 1040-NR, or 1040-NR EZ

  • Make certain elections after the prescribed deadline
  • Change amounts previously adjusted by the IRS
  • Make a claim for a carryback due to a loss or unused credit

If youre due a refund from your original return, wait until you get the refund before filing Form 1040X to claim an additional refund. On the other hand, if you owe more tax, you should file the amended return and pay the tax as soon as possible to reduce any interest and penalties.

Theres a three-year window to file an amended return in order to claim a refund. That means you have three years from the date you e-filed your original return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, if that date is later. For example, the last day for most taxpayers to file a 2017 claim for a refund is April 15, 2021.

There are some special rules that may apply, so check out the 1040X instructions for those.

Amending more than one return? Youll need to prepare a 1040X for each year you amend. Write the year of the return at the top of the 1040X. Form instructions should tell you where to mail it.

Sage HandiTax (AU) – Lodging prior year ELS tax return via SBR

Can you amend your taxes if you forgot something or made a mistake? Sure. Should you? It depends. You must file a tax return with the IRS each year if your income is over the requisite level. In fact, you can be prosecuted for failure to file or for filing falsely . Ask yourself whether the return you filed was accurate to your best knowledge when you filed it. If not, you should probably amend. If so, you are probably safe in not filing an amendment. If you are being audited, amending may also send the wrong signal, further jeopardizing your position. So think about it carefully. Of course, you may want to amend. Perhaps you realized you made a mistake, forgot payment or Form W-2, or left off the income from a Form 1099 you found in the bottom of a drawer. Math errors are not a reason to file an amended return, since the IRS will correct math errors on your return. Similarly, you usually shouldnt file an amended return if you discover you omitted a Form W-2, forgot to attach schedules, or other glitches of that sort. The IRS may process your return without them, or will request them if needed.

Disadvantages Of An Amended Tax Return

The drawback of filing an amended tax return is that Form 1040-X cannot be submitted electronically for every tax year, although the IRS has recently started accepting e-filed amended returns for tax year 2019. If filling out the form manually, the taxpayer has to mail the printed-out document to the IRS Service Center that processed the original tax form. The IRS manually processes amended returns, and the process can take 16 weeksor even longer, if the amended return is not signed, is incomplete, has errors, requires additional information, needs clearance by the IRS bankruptcy department, has been routed to another specialized area, or has been affected by identity fraud.

There is, however, a three-year statute of limitations for issuing tax refund checks. Therefore, the taxpayer must file any amended returns that will result in a tax refund within three years after the date they filed the original tax return. An amended return filed to account for additional income or overstated deductions does not fall under any such statute and can be filed at any time.

    • You can correct errors on an amended tax return.

    • You can claim a refund you were owed even if you didn’t file for it.
