How Do You Find Out If Your Taxes Were Filed

Speeding Up Your Refund

What To Do If You Haven’t Filed Taxes In Years

If youre checking your IRS refund status and dissatisfied with the length of time its taking to go through, there are a few things you can do next year to get things moving along faster.

The first step is to avoid paper-based filing altogether. If you e-file, not only will you receive your return faster, but youll have the confidence of knowing your return is with the IRS almost as soon as youve submitted it, rather than having to worry whether its been lost in the mail.

One exception to this is if you owe, since you may want to hold on to your money and mail it on the date of the tax deadline. However, you can still file electronically and mail your payment separately later. You should also file as early as possible in the tax season, although you may find that youre held up waiting for your employers and financial institutions to send the forms you need.

Another way to speed up your refund is to opt to receive it electronically. If you choose to have a check mailed to you, youll be waiting much longer. You can have your refund deposited in up to three separate bank accounts.

You should also begin checking the IRS Refund Status page as soon as possible and check it regularly throughout the time youre waiting for your refund. This will allow you to see a request to call the IRS early in the season, possibly letting you clear things up quickly so that your return can be moved to the refund processing stage.

First Check Your Refund Status Online

If you are wondering where your refund is, you can start by checking its status on the Internal Revenue Service’s Where’s My Refund? page.

To do that, the IRS says you will need:

  • Your Social Security Number or ITIN
  • Your filing status
  • Your exact refund amount

However, the IRS says you should not call unless:

  • It has been 21 or more days since you e-filed, or
  • The Where’s My Refund? online tool tells you to contact the IRS.

How Should I Contact The Irs For More Help

The IRS received 167 million calls this tax season, which is four times the number of calls in 2019. And based on the recent report, only 7 percent of calls reached a telephone agent for help. While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agency’s live phone assistance is extremely limited right now because the IRS says it’s working hard to get through the backlog. You shouldn’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

The IRS is directing people to the Let Us Help You page on its website for more information. It also advises taxpayers to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’re eligible for assistance by calling them: 877-777-4778.

Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Where’s My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. You can call: 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours.

File Your Tax Return Electronically

Combining both direct deposit and electronic filing can greatly speed up your tax refund. Since filing electronically requires the use of a tax software program, it can flag errors that may cause processing delays by the IRS. These errors may include incorrect Social Security numbers, dependents dates of birth, and misspelling of names.

You can electronically file your tax return for free using the IRS Free File Program if your adjusted gross income is less than $72,000. Most simple tax returns can also generally be filed for free, although you may be charged to file your state taxes.

If your tax situation is more complicated if you sold property, paid business expenses or earned investment or business income, for exampleyou should consider hiring a tax professional. Having a knowledgeable tax professional, such as an enrolled agent, certified public accountant or other tax professional can help review your tax return and identify any mistakes that may slow down the processing of your tax refund.

How To Get A Faster Tax Refund

Read this before you file your tax return

Here are four things that can help keep your “Where’s my refund” worries under control.

  • Avoid filing your tax return on paper. It’s a myth that your IRS refund status will be “pending” for a long time and that the IRS takes forever to issue a refund. In reality, you can avoid weeks of wondering “where’s my refund?” by avoiding paper. The IRS typically takes six to eight weeks to process paper returns. Instead, file electronically those returns are processed in about three weeks. State tax authorities also accept electronic tax returns, which means you may be able to get your state tax refund faster, too.

  • Get direct deposit. When you file your return, tell the IRS to deposit your refund directly into your bank account instead of sending a paper check. That cuts the time in waiting for the mail and having to check your IRS refund status. You even can have the IRS split your refund across your retirement, health savings, college savings or other accounts so that you dont fritter it away.

  • Don’t let things go too long. If you haven’t received your tax refund after at least 21 days of filing online or six weeks of mailing your paper return, go to a local IRS office or call the federal agency . But that wont fast-track your refund, according to the IRS. “Where’s my refund” will undoubtedly be a concern, but the thing to worry about here is refund theft. It isn’t corrected quickly, so you may be in for an even longer wait.

I See An Irs Treas 310 Transaction On My Bank Statement What Is It

If you receive your tax refund by direct deposit, you may see IRS TREAS 310 listed for the transaction. The 310 code simply identifies the transaction as a refund from a filed tax return in the form of an electronic payment . This would also apply to those receiving an automatic adjustment on their tax return or a refund due to March legislation on tax-free unemployment benefits. You may also see TAX REF in the description field for a refund.

If you received IRS TREAS 310 combined with a CHILD CTC description, that means the money is for a monthly advance payment for the enhanced child tax credit.

If you see a 449 instead of 310, it means your refund has been offset for delinquent debt.

Reasons For A Late Tax Refund

Many things can hold up the processing and delivery of your tax refund. For example, it could be delayed if you filed your return too early or waited until the last minute. If you tried to file in January, for example, a last-minute change to the tax code could have triggered an error on your return that slowed down the processing. Similarly, waiting until the very last minute to get your return in can mean a longer wait for your refund if the IRS is clogged up with a larger than usual volume of returns.

Also, keep in mind that filing a paper return can slow things down. The fastest way to fileand to get your refundis to do it electronically online.

Beyond those possibilities, here are some of the most common causes of delay.

Correct Mistakes And File An Amended Return

When an e-filed return gets rejected, the IRS will often let you know within a few hours. It also sends a rejection code and explanation of why the e-filed return was rejected.

If you had a company e-file your return, it must either correct the mistake on your behalf or inform you that your return was rejected within 24 hours.

You may be able to e-file a corrected return if your return was rejected for any of these reasons:

    • A Social Security number or Taxpayer Identification Number doesnt match the taxpayers name.
    • You misspelled a name.
    • A payers identification number, such as your employers Employer Identification Number, isnt correct.
    • Your return is missing a form.

The important thing to do is to make sure that the names and numbers reported on your tax returns match the paper information that they are taken from, says Willey.

If you need to e-file an amended return, can help. The free online tax filing service can help you file your corrected federal income tax return. Remember, whether you hand-key information into e-filing software, write it on a paper form, or rely on software to import information, be sure to thoroughly check the accuracy of all information before filing your return.

Determine If The Irs Filed A Substitute Return

Can You File Your Taxes From An App?

Just because you didnât file your return doesnât mean the IRS wonât file one for you. The IRS may file a Substitution for Return or SFR on your behalf. Donât think of this as a complementary tax filing service. The IRS wonât give you any of the exemptions or deductions that rightfully belong to you.

Once an SFR is filed, you will be sent a notice to accept the tax liability as filed in this alternate return. If you donât respond, the IRS will issue a notice of deficiency. At this point, the tax is considered owed by you and the IRS can begin the collection process. To encourage payment, a levy can be placed on your wages or bank accounts. A federal tax lien may also be placed against your real property.

If an SFR was filed, you donât have to accept the outcome. You can go back and refile those years and include any available deductions. Chances are you can decrease the tax owed, as well as the interest and penalties.

    Irs Predicted Turnaround Times

Haven’t Filed Taxes In Years? What You Should do!

Before you start checking the IRS Refund Status page, it can help to understand how long you can expect to wait for your refund. According to the IRS, nine out of 10 refunds are issued within 21 days of a return being filed. This turnaround time doesnt apply to the estimated 10 percentof taxpayers who mail their returns in since those take significantly longer to process.

But as youre wondering how to find out if a tax return was filed, its important to know that some things can slow your refund down. In 2017, for instance, the IRS was under a mandate to not issue refunds for the Earned Income Tax Credit until mid-February. For those who filed in January, that meant a slightly longer wait than they might have expected otherwise. Since this can vary from year to year, the 21-day turnaround can easily change without taxpayers being aware of it.
