What To Do If You Have Not Received Your W

Will IRS Change Tax Filing Deadline? | 2021 Tax Day Date Change

Before you can file your tax return, you have to have all of the documents needed, including your W-2. All of your employers are responsible for sending you this, yet they do have until February 2nd to do so. If you have not received your W-2 yet, you can follow these steps.

Contact Your Employer If you have not received your W-2 yet, you need to contact your employer to see when they put it in the mail. Its possible that it was returned to them due to incorrect mailing details. Once you have contacted them and found out the status, give it a reasonable amount of time for your W-2 to arrive.

Contact The IRS If you have not received your W-2 after February 14th, it is time to call the IRS at 800-829-1040 for assistance. When calling, make sure you have your name, address, social security number, and phone number. Additionally, you will need your employers name, address, phone number, your employment date, the estimate wages earned from them during the year, and estimated federal income tax that was withheld. To make an estimation, you should refer to your most recent pay stub.

File Your Return Even if you do not have your W-2, the IRS expects you to file by April 18, or request an extension. You can use Form 4852 Substitute for Form w-2, Wage and Tax Statement. This form should be attached to your return; however, keep in mind your refund may be delayed since the IRS has to verify your information.

What Do I Need To File Taxes

Employees need W-2s and non-employees, including contractors or gig workers, need 1099s. These forms were either mailed to you in February or are available online through your payroll company.

Freelancers:

If you still don’t have your W-2 by the tax deadline, you can use the W-2 substitute, Form 4852,;and estimate your wages and withheld taxes. Note that the IRS could delay your refund while verifying the information.

You’ll also need your adjusted gross income from the previous year to sign and file your tax return.

CNET has rounded up the best tax software, featuring vendors such as TurboTax, H&R Block and TaxSlayer. These companies can make the tax filing process much easier, from reporting your taxable or self-employed income to setting up direct deposit to going through your itemized deductions.

That noted, the IRS provides a list of free online tax prep software;offered by many of those same providers. You can use this service if you meet certain criteria and have a relatively simple tax situation. Requirements include: You make less than $72,000 annually, you don’t itemize deductions and you don’t own a business. This will likely be helpful for people who do not typically have to file taxes but need to do so this year to claim missing stimulus money.

If you want to itemize deductions or have a more complex financial situation — you run a business, have investments or generate rental income — you’ll have to pay for a higher tier of service, which can run a couple hundred dollars. Still, for most people, even the most deluxe online package is far less expensive than hiring an authorized tax pro. And if you prefer to keep it old-school, the IRS’ online tax forms handle some but not all of the calculations for you and still allow you to e-file or print and mail.

A number of online tax software providers will help you file for free.

Some Tax Filing Deadlines And Estimated Tax Payments Remain The Same

Do You Still Owe Tax Money on April 15, 2021? | New Tax Filing Deadline

Unfortunately the new IRS individual tax filing deadline doesnt apply to the due date for estimated tax payments.

Typically, you must pay quarterly estimated tax payments if you earned income but did not have enough tax withheld throughout the year. Generally, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file your tax return, you need to make estimated tax payments.

Karon says that if you need to make your first quarter 2021 federal estimated tax payment, you will still need to do so by April 15. In a recent letter to the IRS Commissioner, a 60-member bipartisan group of members of Congress requested the IRS extend the estimated tax payment due date from April 15 to May 17. So far, the IRS hasnt announced an extension.

Lastly, while the new tax deadline provides tax relief to specific federal tax deadlines and payments, it does not extend the state tax deadlines. While certain states have extended their due dates to match the federal deadline, such as Louisiana and Oklahoma, others have yet to follow suit.

Some states may be due April 15, Karon says. You will need to look at what each state has decided to know for sure.

Best Ways To Spend Your Tax Refund

If youre expecting a tax refund this year, youll want to spend it wisely. Here are some ways to put the money to good use.

  • Pay down credit cards:Carrying a balance on credit cards can hurt your credit score and may prevent you from qualifying for a mortgage or other loan. Paying off your debt early can help improve your credit score and save you money on interest.
  • Save for an emergency:Experts recommend having three to six months worth of savings held in an emergency fund. That way youll be covered in the event of a job loss or other unexpected financial hardship.
  • Save for retirement:In 2021 individuals may contribute up to $6,000 to a traditional or Roth individual retirement account . Taxpayers who are age 50 or older may contribute an additional $1,000. Both types of accounts offer tax benefits to help grow your savings.;
  • Save for college:If you have children or grandchildren, consider putting money away in a 529 college savings plan. Your investment grows tax-deferred, and withdrawals used to pay for college are tax-free. Each dollar you save will reduce the amount the child has to borrow in student loans.

What Happens If I Miss The Tax Deadline

If you fail to file your income taxes by midnight on May 17, what happens next depends on your situation. If you are owed a refund, there is no penalty for filing late, though this may be different for your state taxes. But if you owe the IRS, penalties and interest will start to accrue on any remaining unpaid tax due in May. There’s also a $330 failure-to-file penalty under the;Taxpayer First Act of 2019.;

It’s best to file on time, even if you owe money that you can’t pay right now — in most cases, late filing penalties are higher than late tax payment penalties. If you can’t file on time, you can file for an extension, which automatically pushes back the tax filing deadline to Oct. 15 and protects you from penalties. In most states, taxpayers who are granted a federal extension to file automatically receive an equivalent extension to file their state income tax return.;

An important note: If you are owed a refund or if you file for an extension through Oct. 15, you still have to pay your taxes by May 17. If you owe money, you’re required to estimate the amount due and pay it with your;Form 4868. If you do that, you’ll automatically be granted an extension.;

Another caveat: If you’re serving in the military — in a combat zone or a contingency operation in support of the armed forces — you may be granted;additional time to file, according to the IRS.;

How Tax Refunds Work

A tax refund is a reimbursement for excess taxes paid during the year. Most workers prepay their federal income taxes through their paycheck or by filing quarterly estimated taxes.

Employees are required to fill out a Form W-4 when they begin working at a company. The information entered on employees’ Form W-4 determines how much the employer will withhold from their pay to cover federal income taxes. If the employer withholds too much, you may receive a tax refund. If you come up short, you will owe taxes.

A contract worker is considered both an employee and an employer. They do not complete a Form W-4; instead, they are required to pay their own taxes on a quarterly basis.

Estimated tax payments for 2021 are due April 15, 2021; June 15, 2021; Sept. 15, 2021; and Jan. 18, 2022.

This is true even though the tax filing deadline for 2020 individual income taxes was moved to May 17, 2021.

You may also receive a tax refund if you claim a refundable tax credit, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit . Most federal income tax credits are non-refundable and will only reduce the amount you owe in taxes. However, if you claim a refundable tax credit that is greater than the amount you owe, you will receive the difference as a tax refund.
