How Much Does It Cost To File Your Taxes

When Should I Consider Hiring A Tax Professional

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO NOT FILE YOUR TAXES?

As a CPA and former IRS agent, there are certain filing situations that I believe should be left to the professionals. I have seen many do it yourself tax returns that landed in the hands of an IRS auditor. Here are some scenarios where you should consider hiring a tax pro:

  • You just started a business in the 2020 tax year or have a complex business structure, such as an S-corporation, partnership or corporation
  • You have employees or youre self-employed
  • You experienced a recent change in your tax situation
  • You sold a property in the 2020 tax year
  • You worked in multiple states

Filing Options With Jackson Hewitt Online

There are three online filing options available for you to take advantage of. These three options are: free, $29.99, and $49.99. Theres also the option to pay an additional $36.95 to file your state tax return with them.

So which option should you choose?

For the self-employed, you will most likely need to choose the most expensive option, which is the $49.99 package. For those with simple returns, its recommended that you start with the free version and then, if needed, upgrade to a different package.

However, no matter which package you choose, you will get access to step-by-step instructions and unlimited support through email and live chat.

How To Find A Reputable Tax Consultant Or Preparer

The government has some helpful tips on choosing a qualified preparer to work with you on your taxes, such as checking their qualifications, asking about service fees, asking if they offer e-filing and making sure theyre available. The agency also has a database where you can check on your preparers qualifications.

Heres a quick guide on how to make sure you find the most qualified professional to help you with your taxes:

  • Check their credentials and qualifications. Are they an accountant? A CPA? Did they take the appropriate accounting courses? Are they an enrolled agent? Or are they an attorney? Take the time to research their history and background so you can trust they’ll provide exceptional service.
  • Ask for referrals. Asking for referrals and speaking to those referrals directly can inform you how easy it is to work with the preparer and if they completed their returns accurately.
  • Read online reviews. Keep in mind that experiences are very personal, and one persons bad experience may not truly indicate that you should not work with the professional. However, if you see a trend of bad reviews for that preparer, you might want to choose a different one.
  • Ask if theyre a member of any professional organization. Perhaps they belong to the National Association of Tax Professionals. You might want a preparer who meets certain standards and appreciates continuing education.

Advice For Late Payers

1) Dont put off filing your taxes on time because you think you may owe money or are worried about being able to pay all the tax you owe. If you do, youre just making things even worse for yourself financially.

Instead, make sure that you get your income tax filed by April 30th even if you cant pay all the tax you owe on that date. That way, even though you may be charged interest on the unpaid balance, at least your benefit payments will keep coming and you wont be charged a late-filing penalty on top of everything else.2) Check out the possibilities of paying over time or having your interest penalties for paying late waived.

The Canada Revenue Agency is open to making payment arrangements with taxpayers who cant pay all the income tax they owe by the deadline. When the time comes, call them at 1-888-863-8657 if you need to.

Also, under the CRAs Taxpayer Relief Provisions, interest penalties may be cancelled or waived in the case of

  • extraordinary circumstances

How Much Should You Pay

It really depends on your situation. I did my taxes for free for years because they were mostly uncomplicated, even when including business expenses. But now that I own an S Corporation, the reporting process is much more complicated, so I pay someone to do all of it now.

If youre not sure, consider using a free service like and go through the process. If it covers everything you need, you can file for free. But if you get to the point where youre not 100% sure youre doing it right, your situation is too complex or you just dont want to deal with it, consider hiring a Certified Public Accountant to help.

When You Should Pay Someone To Do Your Taxes

If you’re going to pay someone to do your taxes, you should be looking for help that is MORE than just data entry. Yes, while a tax preparer is there to actually file your taxes – the process of getting ready to do so can involve a lot of moving parts. And this expert you’re going to hire should be able to help navigate you through it.

Some common examples of when it makes sense to pay someone to do your taxes:

    • You make over $200,000 per year
    • You had a life event, such as marriage, divorce, or children
    • You started a business
    • You own complicated investments like partnerships or trusts
    • You have questions that you can’t answer

The goal of paying someone to do your taxes should be two-fold. Of course, getting your actual taxes done. And getting help and advice. Some common areas where a paid professional can help include:

    • Optimizing your accounts to lower your tax burden
    • Ensuring that you qualify for credits and deductions or that you take all credits and deductions you’re qualified for
    • Keep accurate records of complicated investments, such as partnerships
    • Help you optimize your business structure to lower your taxes

So, when deciding if you should pay someone, keep those ideas in mind when discussing your situation.
