The IRS is directing taxpayers to the Let Us Help You page on its website and to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers around the country. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’re eligible for assistance by calling: 877-777-4778.
Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Where’s My Refund tool tells you to. You can call 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours. If you have not received a refund yet, you shouldn’t file a second tax return.

What Might Delay My Tax Refund
Here’s are some typical reasons why tax refunds are delayed:
- Your return has errors or is incomplete.
- Your refund is suspected of identity theft or fraud.
- Your return needs further review.
- You didn’t properly reconcile your stimulus payment with the recovery rebate credit.
In testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee, IRS Commissioner Charles P. Retting said that the agency received “far more than 10 million returns” last year in which taxpayers failed to properly reconcile their received stimulus payments with their recovery rebate credit, which required a manual review and resolution.
If the delay is due to a necessary tax correction made to a recovery rebate credit, earned income tax or additional child tax credit claimed on your return, the IRS will send you an explanation. If there’s a problem that needs to be fixed, the IRS will first try to proceed without contacting you. However, if it needs any more information, it will write you a letter.
If you’ve requested a paper check for your tax refund, it’ll take longer, too — about six to eight weeks, according to the IRS.

Filing By Hand Vs Using Online Software
If you choose to file your taxes by hand, youll download and fill out relevant IRS forms and mail them to your local collection address. Tax forms are available for free at IRS.gov, and you may need to fill out more than 1 depending on your deductibles, employment situation and marital filing status.
To make a payment, you may mail a check to the IRS directly or you use a debit card, credit card or same-day wire transfer by using the IRS online payment system.
Filing your taxes by hand may take a little longer, but it can be a good option if you have a simple return. If you arent interested in learning more about tax process or have a complicated return, a tax prep software can help guide your way.
This is especially true if you own rental properties or make regular income through the stock market with investment taxes. Tax prep software can also walk you through the process if youre a business owner who needs to calculate capital gains taxes. Software can navigate the myriad of tax laws, deductibles and exemptions you need to detail.

Why Would My Tax Refund Come In The Mail
There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouses name or a joint account. If thats not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS next best way to refund your money quickly.
Its also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isnt always automatic. Some are noticing that like the stimulus checks, the first few payments for the child tax credit were mailed. Just in case, parents should sign in to the IRS portal to check that the agency has their correct banking information. If not, parents can add it for the next payment.

States With Progressive Income Taxes
A progressive income tax means that as you earn more money, you pay a larger percentage in taxes. A range of income taxed at a specific rate is known as a tax bracket.
The remaining 32 states all have a progressive income tax, and they all do it differently. Some states, like Kansas, have three tax brackets based on your income, but California has 10 brackets and Hawaii has a dozen!4 It takes some math skills to figure out your tax liability in a 10-bracket system.
State income tax brackets range from 0.33% in Iowa for income less than $1,743 all the way up to 13.3% for income over $1 million in California.5
Many states include brackets within narrow income clusters, so you end up reaching the highest marginal rate pretty quickly as your income grows. A marginal rate is the tax rate you pay within each backet of you income. Its often more helpful to look at average tax rate because thats the average amount of taxes youll pay based on you income.
Since states have so many different tax brackets, its difficult to compare tax rates among the states to get an idea of what you might actually pay in taxes. But just to give you a ballpark figureif you earn an average income of about $70,000, youll likely pay about 4% to 6% in taxes in most states.
North Dakota has the lowest top marginal rate at 2.9%, and it kicks in once you make $445,000 .6
