Choosing Standard Or Itemized Deductions

Once you know your AGI, you have the opportunity to lower your taxable income even more by subtracting either the standard deduction or your itemized deductionswhichever is greater.

When to consider the standard deduction

If your financial situation is straightforward, the standard deduction might be the best and simplest choice. The standard deduction for 2014 is $6,200 for single filers, $12,400 for married filing jointly and $9,100 for head of household.

When to consider itemizing deductions

If you pay a lot in state income taxes, have a mortgage on your home, give a lot to charity, have paid extensive medical bills or manage a lot of investments, you might be better off taking the extra time to itemize your deductions.

Examples of legitimate itemized deductions:

  • Property taxes
  • State and local income taxes
  • Specified medical and dental expenses that exceed 10 percent of your AGI , including limited amount of premiums paid for long-term care policies
  • Mortgage interest on first and secondary residences , plus interest on home equity loans
  • Charitable contributions to tax-exempt organizations
  • Casualty and theft losses
  • Investment interest expense
  • Miscellaneous expenses, including impairment-related expenses for persons with disabilities and gambling losses to the extent of gambling winnings
  • In addition, the following can be itemized if the cumulative total is more than 2 percent of your AGI:
  • Business expenses not paid by your employer

What Is My Filing Status

It depends the filing statuses are single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household, and qualifying widow. If you support a child or relative, they may qualify as your dependent. There are different requirements for qualifying children and qualifying relatives, but both types of dependents must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien. You must be the only taxpayer claiming them, and they must be filing single or married filing separately if they’re required to file their own return. For more, see Who Can I Claim as a Dependent?

How To Calculate Your Tax Refund

Every year when you file your income taxes, three things can happen. You can learn that you owe the IRS money, that the IRS owes you money or that youre about even, having paid the right amount in taxes throughout the year. If the IRS owes you money it will come in the form of a tax refund. However, if you owe the IRS, youll have a bill to pay. SmartAsset’s tax return estimator can help you figure out how much money could be coming your way, or how much youre likely to owe.

Why would the IRS owe you a tax refund? There are several possible scenarios. You might have overpaid your estimated taxes or had too much withheld from your paycheck at work. You might also qualify for so many tax deductions and tax credits that you eliminate your tax liability and are eligible for a refund. A tax return calculator takes all this into account to show you whether you can expect a refund or not, and give you an estimate of how much to expect.

An addition to tax is imposed by law if at least 90% of your total tax liability is not paid throughout the year by timely withholding and/or installments of estimated tax except in certain situations. The addition to tax does not apply if each required installment is paid on time and meets one of the following exceptions:

  • Is at least 90% of amount due based on annualized income
  • Is at least 90% of amount due based on the actual taxable income
  • Is based on a tax computed by using your income for the preceding taxable year and the current year’s tax rates and exemptions
  • Is equal to or exceeds the prior year’s tax liability for each installment period and the prior year return was for a full year and reflected an income tax liability or
  • The sum of all installment underpayments for the taxable year is $150 or less

If you do not qualify for an exception, your underpayment computation will be based on 90% of the current year’s income tax liability or 100% of your liability for the preceding year, whichever is less. The addition to tax is computed on Form 760C .

How A Tax Calculator Can Help

Our tax calculator, like others, can only estimate your federal tax liability. To get the exact figure, you need to complete your tax return.

However, using a tax calculator before you sit down to tackle your taxes has several benefits:

  • Estimate your refund or tax bill. By entering basic information about your annual income, filing status, and deductions, you can find out whether you underpaid or overpaid taxes throughout the year and prepare your budget accordingly for a bill or refund.
  • If your tax bill is larger or your refund is smaller than expected, consider consulting a tax professional to find out how to change the outcome for next year.
  • Determine whether you have the correct amount withheld from your paycheck. If you wind up with a big tax bill, you may need to revisit your W-4. Ideally, the amount of money your employer withholds from each of your paychecks for taxes will be as close to what you actually owe as possible. However, if you enjoy getting a big refund, you can instruct your employer to withhold more of your paycheck for income taxes.
  • Estimate your effective tax rate. Calculating your tax liability will allow you to figure out what overall percentage of your income is going to federal income taxes.

Why The Irs Issues Refunds

How To Calculate What Your Tax Return Will Be

Your employer determines the rate of your withholding tax by calculating your income, personal allowances, and other taxes you want to be withheld, as listed on your W-4 form.

Sometimes, however, your rate of withholding tax is greater than your actual tax liability, or the amount of tax you have to pay. This is why the IRS issues tax refunds to taxpayers, who qualify at the end of each tax season.

Penalty For Underpayment Of Estimated Tax

If you didnt pay enough tax throughout the year, either through withholding or by making estimated tax payments, you may have to pay a penalty for underpayment of estimated tax. Generally, most taxpayers will avoid this penalty if they owe less than $1,000 in tax after subtracting their withholdings and credits, or if they paid at least 90% of the tax for the current year, or 100% of the tax shown on the return for the prior year, whichever is smaller. There are special rules for farmers, fishermen, and certain higher income taxpayers. Please refer to Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax, for additional information.

However, if your income is received unevenly during the year, you may be able to avoid or lower the penalty by annualizing your income and making unequal payments. Use Form 2210, Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals, Estates, and Trusts , to see if you owe a penalty for underpaying your estimated tax. Please refer to the Form 1040 and 1040-SR Instructions or Form 1120 Instructions PDF, for where to report the estimated tax penalty on your return.

The penalty may also be waived if:

The biggest factor in receiving a refund is a large RRSP contribution and having too much tax deducted from your salary, she explains. When you contribute to an RRSP or make other major deductions, you can subtract the amounts from your total income and get your net income. This ultimately affects your tax payable.
