Obtain All The Required Forms

Tax Tips: How to mail your tax return

Tax returns are amended by filing Form 1040X, which serves to correct, add, or delete information on an already filed 1040 form. Sometimes you might need to obtain accompanying schedules for the 1040 form: Schedule A, Schedule B, Schedule C, and Schedule SE.

The 1040X form allows you to list your children as dependents, report forgotten income, and make several other changeseverything is clearly marked on the form. The tax return adjustment form can be found onlinesimply and print it. If youre filing to amend more than one tax return from previous years, youll need a form for each tax year youre filing to amend. If the correction youre filing to amend concerns reported items on a schedule, you must prepare a new schedule and send it with the 1040X. Regardless of the mistake on taxes already filed, Form 1040X doesnt require you to redo the entire tax returnyou need only to include items that have been subjected to changes.

Completing Online Tax Forms

In the tax year 2018, the government changed Form 1040 and the supplemental forms many taxpayers file along with it. Instead of forms 1040, 1040-A, and 1040-EZ, theres Form 1040 for most filers, plus a different form you can choose to file if you’re a senior: Form 1040-SR.

Taxpayers who take the standard deduction and have simple returns dont need to file any other forms.

The IRS provides a fillable PDF of Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR online. You can type in your information and then print the form, but a safer option is to download it first, then save it to your hard drive as you fill it out so you dont lose your entries if your browser crashes or you accidentally close it. After filling out and printing the form, you’ll sign it, attach copies of any required forms , and mail it in.

This process is simple and inexpensive youll need to pay for postage, preferably a method you can track to prove you submitted your return on time. If youre due a refund, the IRS says it will process your payment within six to eight weeks for a paper return submitted by mail.

People who need to report information not included on Form 1040 will need to submit additional schedules. These might include one or more of the following:

For a complete list, see “Schedules for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR.” You can fill out these schedules just as we described above for Form 1040.

New Tax Rules For The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion During The Covid

As Coronavirus safety concerns and travel bans increased, some Americans living abroad decided to return to the US. Many had intended to stay abroad but cut their plans short because of the pandemic. Taking into account these unique circumstances, the IRS decided to adjust the requirements to qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion.

Under the revised rules, if you reasonably expected to meet the eligibility requirements of the FEIE during 2019 or 2020 but failed to do so because of the Coronavirus pandemic, you can still claim the tax exclusion. However, you must have left your country of residence within a specified date range. The date range is determined by when the period of adverse conditions began in different regions.

Therefore, you can still qualify for the FEIE if you left these regions after the dates below:

The period for this exception will end on July 15, 2020, unless the Treasury Department and IRS choose to extend it. This means that, if you left China between December 1, 2019 and July 15, 2020, you could still qualify as physically present or a bona fide residentso long as you expected to meet the requirements if not for the COVID-19 Emergency.

To determine the maximum available exclusion you can claim, youll need to prorate the FEIE amount based on the percentage of the year that you lived outside the US.

Heres how you would calculate the maximum FEIE exclusion for 2020 based on our example above:

What Is An Itin

The Internal Revenue Service issues Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers to people who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible for, a Social Security number .

An ITIN does not:

  • Allow you to receive Social Security benefits
  • Allow you to claim the EITC
  • Permit a child to be claimed for the EITC or CTC. A child must have a valid SSN and authorization to legally work in the U.S. to be claimed for the EITC and CTC.)
  • Change your immigration status
  • Mean that you are an undocumented worker
  • Give you the right to work in the U.S. Any individual who is eligible to be legally employed in the U.S. must have an SSN. If you have an ITIN you should not provide it to an employer in place of an SSN, since this would indicate to your employer and to the Social Security Administration that you are not authorized to work.

The ITIN is used in place of an SSN on a tax return to identify you, your spouse, or dependent without an SSN, on the tax return. For example, if you are an immigrant in the U.S. who has applied for legal status to work or reside in the U.S., you would need an ITIN to file a tax return while waiting for a decision.

If you have an ITIN that was issued before 2013, you should have already received a notice from IRS to renew it. If you havent used your ITIN on a U.S. federal tax return in the last three years you will need to renew it. For more information, visit ITIN Renewals.

Where To Get Copies Of Tax Forms Due To You

Before you can file, youll need tax forms from the financial institutions with which you have accounts. They should either arrive in the mail, or you’ll receive information on how to access them online. These forms report how much interest youve earned on high-yield savings accounts and certificates of deposit, how much money you made or lost from selling investments, and the amount of any distributions youve taken from retirement accounts.

Youll also need tax forms documenting your earned income and the taxes youve already paid. The most common of these is Form W-2 employees receive it from their employers. Freelancers and independent contractors should receive Form 1099-MISC from each client who has paid them $600 or more . You might also receive a 1099-MISC for certain other types of income, such as prize money.

In addition, you may receive forms documenting any interest youve paid on a student loan or mortgage. This interest may be tax-deductible, depending on your circumstances.

Traditionally, financial institutions, employers, and clients mailed paper copies of these forms to you. Today, you may need to retrieve them yourself by logging into your account online. Sometimes this service is optional, but other times it will be the only way you can get the forms you need.

Filing By Hand Vs Using Online Software

How Should I Contact The Irs For More Help

IRS report says $450 billion owed

The IRS received 167 million calls this tax season, which is four times the number of calls in 2019. And based on the recent report, only 7 percent of calls reached a telephone agent for help. While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agencys live phone assistance is extremely limited right now because the IRS says its working hard to get through the backlog. You shouldnt file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

The IRS is directing people to the Let Us Help You page on its website for more information. It also advises taxpayers to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if youre eligible for assistance by calling them: 877-777-4778.

Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if its been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Wheres My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. You can call: 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours.

Why Would My Tax Refund Come In The Mail

There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouses name or a joint account. If thats not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS next best way to refund your money quickly.

Its also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isnt always automatic. Some are noticing that like the stimulus checks, the first few payments for the child tax credit were mailed. Just in case, parents should sign in to the IRS portal to check that the agency has their correct banking information. If not, parents can add it for the next payment.

Utilize Expat Tax Benefits Before Sending Your Form

Before you send in that US tax form in the mail, we suggest you check out if you utilized all the expat tax benefits:

The US has provided three specific expat tax benefits that can help you stop paying more than you should.

Foreign Tax Credit

Generally, you can get a $ for $ credit from the income taxes paid to your host country against your US tax liability.

When you pay foreign income taxes, such as UK income taxes, you can use those amounts to offset your US tax bill. For example, if you would owe $5,000 in US taxes but have already paid 7,000 GBP taxes to the UK Government, the US will allow you to reduce your tax bill to $0.

You will need to claim the foreign tax credit on Form 1116.

Foreign Earned Income Exclusion

The FEIE gives US expats the right to around $100,000 on any earned income sourced outside the US. This is known as foreign sourced income. Plus, it doesnt matter if youre a short-term or long-term expat to take advantage of this benefit.

To check if you are qualified for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion youll need to take two tests. The Bone Fide and Physical Presence test which you can take here.

Foreign Housing Exclusion

If you earn more than the FEIE exclusion amount then you can score an additional expat tax benefit. Its called the Foreign Housing Exclusion.

We at MyExpatTaxes also have the housing exclusion within our software. Its helping hundreds of expats on a weekly basis.
