I Have Questions About My Taxes Can I Call The Irs

There are numerous ways to contact the IRS. The agency no longer offers live online chatting, but you can still submit questions through its online form. If you prefer to talk to a person, the IRS maintains a number of dedicated phone lines that are open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. . Individuals can call 800-829-1040 and businesses can call 800-829-4933. Note, however, that the IRS says “live phone assistance is extremely limited at this time.”

And there’s always the Interactive Tax Assistant, an automated online tool that provides answers to a number of tax law questions. It can determine if a type of income is taxable, if you’re eligible to claim certain credits and whether you can deduct expenses on your tax return. It also provides answers for general questions, such as determining your filing status, whether you can claim dependents or if you even have to file a tax return.

If you have a question for the IRS specifically related to stimulus checks and your taxes, the IRS recommends that you check IRS.gov and the Get My Payment application.

If you decide to unenroll from the monthly payments this year, you still have time to have the remainder of your child tax credit money show up next tax season. You may decide to unenroll, for example, if you think you may need to pay back money when you file your taxes in 2022.

Note that the IRS opt-out deadlines are about two weeks ahead of the payment dates. If you miss one deadline for a round of checks, your changes will take effect with the next round. And these are the same deadlines you need to hit for making other changes to your account, such as adding your banking information or changing your mailing address. The Update Portal doesn’t yet allow you to make changes to your marital status and number of dependents.

Here are the remaining dates by which you would need to unenroll:

Will The Irs Tax Deadline Be Extended

The IRS did not return Money’s request for comment. But current IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in February there were no plans to extend the deadline, adding that it “it creates a lot of confusion for taxpayers” and “backs up” the IRS.

Bill Smith, a managing director for CBIZ MHM’s National Tax Office, points to Rettig’s remarks as evidence the date won’t be moved. He also says this year’s filing season doesn’t pose the same problems as last year’s did.

“There’s a lot going on, but don’t expect them to put off the April 15 filing deadline,” Smith adds.

Regardless, if you need more time to do your taxes, you can always request an extension. This typically delays your filing deadline to Oct. 15. But remember: If you owe the government money, you still have to pay on time.

This story has been updated to reflect that President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law.

On March 17th, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This is to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic. In the announcement, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig stated “Even with the new deadline, we urge taxpayers to consider filing as soon as possible. Just because the filing date has been pushed back does not mean that is the right move for you.

th is still a relevant deadline to many taxpayers. The moving of the federal deadline for filing does not mean everything due on April 15th moved. Estimated tax payments are still due on April 15th. While 41 states moved their deadline last year to line up with the federal date, some states m ay still have April 15th as their 2020 deadline. Check with your states tax administrator to verify when your state return is due.

If you file online, there’s nothing to print out or mail, but we recommend you save an electronic copy for your records regardless. This could be especially useful if a third stimulus check is approved, since for the first two rounds of checks, your eligibility was based on your tax returns.

Otherwise, you’ll need to mail your return to the IRS. The specific mailing address depends on which tax form you use and which state you live in. The IRS has published a list of where to file paper tax returns this year here. Be warned, however: The IRS says that due to staffing issues, processing paper returns could take several weeks longer this year.
