Why The Salt Deduction Matters

The deduction for state and local taxes has been around since 1913, when the U.S. first instituted our federal income tax. Defenders of the SALT deduction, such as the National Governors Association, point out that state and local income, real estate and sales taxes are mandatory. Taxpayers cant get out of them. For advocates of the deduction, eliminating it would therefore constitute double taxation.

At the same time, the SALT deduction is one of the largest federal tax expenditures. Along with the mortgage interest deduction, the non-taxation of employer-sponsored health benefits and pension benefits, preferential tax rates on capital gains and the tax deferral of corporate profits earned abroad, the SALT deduction costs the federal government trillions in missed revenue opportunities. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that those and other tax expenditures added up to over 8% of GDP in 2017. Thats an amount equal to nearly half of all federal revenues in 2017.

So who will miss the SALT deduction the most? According to a 2016 report from the Tax Policy Center, Taxpayers with incomes over $100,000 would have the largest tax increases both in dollars and as a percentage of income. Eliminating the deduction entirely would raise taxes for about a quarter of taxpayers and reducing the deduction would affect about half as of people.

What Is The Qualified Business Income Deduction

You may have a chance to reduce your self-employment income further by claiming the qualified business income deduction. This allows you to reduce your pass-through income from self-employment or owning a small business by up to 20% on your tax return.

You can reduce the net amount of qualified items of income, gains, deductions, and losses tied to your trade or business. This means items like capital gains and losses, dividends, interest income, and other nonbusiness gains and losses don’t figure into this calculation.

In general, to claim the QBI deduction, your taxable income must fall below $163,300 for single filers or $326,600 for joint filers in 2020. Tax year 2021 sees the limits rise to $164,900 and $329,800, respectively.

You first must figure out your self-employment or business income using Schedule C and report your adjusted gross income on Form 1040. From there, you can calculate this pass-through deduction.

Is There An App For That

State and local tax deductions – TurboTax Support Video

Yes, Wealthsimple does offer an app that you can download from the Apple Store if you have an iPhone or an iPad. I have neither, so Im not able to provide any commentary on using the app. Although looking at the pictures, the iPad experience is about the same as the desktop/laptop experience.

The iPhone experience looks a bit harder to use because the screen real estate on a phone does not lend itself to doing complicated things like filing your taxes. If thats the only way youve got to access Wealthsimple Tax, then go for it. Just keep in mind that if your experience is less than desirable, it could be because youre doing it on your phone.

Now, if youre an Android user and youre feeling a bit left out, dont worry. I can confirm that the Wealthsimple Tax website is mobile-friendly and offers what looks to be the same experience as the Apple app does. With the added advantage of not having to download any apps on your phone.
