What If I’m Still Awaiting My 2020 Tax Return
The IRS says it “continues to make progress in this area and has taken numerous steps to help address this issue.”
If you are still awaiting a 2020 tax return, you do not need to wait for it to be fully processed in order to file your 2021 taxes.
According to the IRS, those with unprocessed 2020 tax returns, should enter $0 for last year’s AGI on their 2021 tax return when electronically filing.
How To File Your Taxes In 2022
There are so many ways to go about filing your taxes in 2022, depending on your circumstances or preferences. Some of the options available include:
Online Tax Software: There are many brands of tax software you can use for filing your taxes. Depending on the level of support you need, you can choose the free or paid versions.
Examples of tax software in Canada include TurboTax Online, WealthsimpleTax, H& R Block Tax, Studio Tax, GenuTax, AdvTax, uFile, and CloudTax.
We have reviewed some of these options and you can learn more about what they offer using the links below:
Tax software simplifies the filing process since you can connect to an existing CRA My Account and use the âauto-fill my returnâ feature to automatically populate a good portion of your information. This automated process also helps to reduce the likelihood of errors occurring.
Using an online software means that you can send your tax return directly to CRA through NETFILE, and get your refund back in as little as 8 business days. Additionally, you will have your tax information for previous years stored online and easily accessible for reference in the future.
Paper Return via Mail: Some people prefer to do their taxes the old-fashioned way. In some years, the CRA mails out tax forms to paper filers to hasten the process. If you prefer to file a paper return and did not receive them in the mail, you can order a paper copy or starting in January 2022.
S Corporation And Partnership Tax Returns Due
Today is the deadline to file your S corporation tax return or Partnership return .
Note that S corporations and Partnerships do not pay taxes on their income. That tax is paid on the individual incomes of the shareholders or partners, respectively.
March 15 is also the deadline to file for an extension for S corp and partnership tax returns.

Watch Out For Tax Filing Scams
Beware of scammers that may try to take advantage of your rush in exchange for your information or money. If you are offered a discount or deal thats too good to be true, chances are it is.
Some scammers may try to charge more depending on how much your tax refund is, Steber adds. Start by asking for an estimated cost upfront, even though the final price may depend on your tax return. If you need more time to find a reputable tax professional, its best to file an extension to give yourself more time to review previous tax returns and documents instead of rushing to file.
Also remember to have your tax professional sign your tax return before submitting it. Thats a requirement under the law, Steber says. If a tax preparer is not willing to sign your return before submitting it, it could be a red flag to have your tax return reviewed and submitted by someone else.
Stimulus Checks Maybe Through Recovery Rebate Credit
Some people might want to file returns even though they’re not required to do so to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit or the 2021 stimulus payments.
According to the IRS, individuals who didn’t qualify for a third Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit. For those who got some money, the IRS says youll need to know the total received to calculate the correct rebate credit and avoid processing delays.
The IRS started mailing Letter 6475 in late January with the total amount of the third Economic Impact Payment received. Economic impact payment amounts also can be viewed on IRS online accounts.

Make Sure To File Taxes On Time
If you expect that you will not be able to file your taxes by the April 18 deadline, you have another option: You can request a timely extension to file your returns. If you make the request prior to April 18, it’s typically automatically granted, so you will have extra time to get your paperwork done.
If you request an extension and it’s approved, your new tax deadline will be Monday Oct. 17, 2022. But to be clear, this is the deadline to file — you will still have to pay your taxes by the April 18 deadline, even if you are given until October to submit your paperwork. If you don’t pay on time, you could get hit with penalties and interest for not submitting the money you owe the IRS on schedule.
The failure-to-file penalty, however, is much larger than the failure-to-pay penalty, so it’s best to deal with the paperwork and get your returns in quickly even if you know you’ll fall short of being able to pay the full amount of taxes due.
If you can file your returns but are unable to pay the bill, you may have some options, including signing up for a payment plan with the IRS. You could also consider using a 0% APR credit card to pay your taxes. If you can pay off the card’s balance before interest is charged, this can sometimes be a far cheaper option than paying the IRS late or using its payment plan — even though you will have to pay a processing fee to pay your taxes with a credit card.
Tax Filing Deadline For Self
If you are self-employed, the CRA gives you a bit longer to submit your income tax return you do not have to submit it until June 15, 2022. This means you are not liable for the late-filing penalty, but CRA will begin assessing interest on any unpaid amounts owing for the tax year starting May 3, 2022.

Extension To File Your Tax Return
If you cant file your federal income tax return by the due date, you may be able to get a six-month extension from the Internal Revenue Service . This does not grant you more time to pay your taxes. To avoid possible penalties, estimate and pay the taxes you owe by the tax deadline of May 17, 2021.
How To File An Extension For Your 2021 Tax Return
As a final thought, it’s important to mention how you can file for a tax extension. And there are two main options.
First, if you want to file your extension easily and quickly, you can file a tax extension through your favorite tax software provider, such as TurboTax or TaxAct. If you don’t have a preferred software provider, you can use the IRS Free File tool to find a provider and submit your extension.
Alternatively, you can print IRS Form 4868 and mail it to the IRS using the address in the form’s instructions. As mentioned earlier, you have to make sure your extension is postmarked by the deadline, but hopefully the extension will give you a little more time and peace of mind to get your taxes filed accurately.

Your Local Post Office Might Be Open Late If You Need It
There was a time when rushing to the post office late at night on Tax Day for a hand-stamped postmark that proved you beat the clock was an annual American ritual. Now, the era of people scrambling to snail-mail their taxes at the 11th hour is largely in the past.
The Internet, it turns out, is starting to catch on.
Some post offices still extend their hours on Tax Day, but many others do not. In the cases that they do, its unlikely to be midnight, as was standard in the bad old days of stamp licking.
If you live in an outpost without reliable broadband Internet, or if you just dont trust something you didnt fold and put in an envelope, consider the following tips. They could save you a bunch of headaches when you drive to the post office to mail your taxes.
Or, consider filing online. Its easier, more secure, gets you your refund more quickly, and the IRS prefers it. It prefers it so much, in fact, that you can file right through the IRS website. You can even do it for free, and depending on your income, you can do it for free with a full-service experience that you would pay for elsewhere.

Special rules may also apply for some military personnel serving in a combat zone or a qualified hazardous duty area, according to the IRS which has a complete list of designated combat zone localities on Publication 3, Armed Forces’ Tax Guide.

When Is The Tax Deadline If Im Out Of The Country
Your tax filing deadline and payment deadline, if you are out of country, is Wednesday, June 15, 2022. If you are out of country, you typically have an additional two months to file your taxes . Those eligible for this later date include:
- Those who live outside the United States and Puerto Rico and main place of work is outside the United States and Puerto Rico, or
- Those in military or naval service outside the United States and Puerto Rico .
If you qualify as being out of the country, you will still be eligible for the extension even if you are physically present in the United States. You must attach a statement to your return explaining which of the two situations qualify you for the extension.
What Are The Penalties For Failing To File
If you aren’t going to get your tax return finished by April 18, it’s best to file for an extension because the failure-to-file penalty is stiff. It is based on the lateness of a tax return as well as the size of unpaid taxes from the due date.
The penalty rate is 5% of unpaid taxes for each month that a filing is late, capped at 25%. Take a taxpayer who owes $10,000 but doesn’t file for an extension if they file two months late, they would $500 each month for a total of $1,000 in penalties.
The 5% penalty is the most stringent fee the IRS levies against late filers, Rebecca Walser of Walser Wealth Management told CBS News.

Social Programs Are Available To Help
On top of the tax companies that can help with tax filings, Espinoza said there are programs out there for some people who help Canadians file their taxes for free.
Depending on your individual circumstances, the Canada Revenue Agency hosts free tax clinics where a team of volunteers can help you with filing your taxes.
Espinoza, who used to volunteer at these clinics, said theyre typically focused on lower-income individuals and people with disabilities who may need some help.
There’s usually an income threshold and you’re evaluated and basically you can go and get your tax return done for free by volunteers, by accountants like me or someone who’s qualified to do the tax return, he said.
It’s a great program and oftentimes I think a lot people don’t know about it.

If You’re Waiting Until The Last Possible Minute To File Your Tax Return You Should At Least Know How Much Time You Have
Tax Day 2022 has finally arrived! Thanks to the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C., the April 15 deadline was pushed back a few days to April 18 this year . So, if you haven’t already filed your 2021 federal income tax return , today’s the day to get moving. But if you’re literally waiting until the last minute, you ought to at least know when that last minute arrives.
The Advanced Child Tax Credit Is So Confusing How Should I Handle That On My Tax Return
Good news: You are not imagining things. The child tax credit is causing headaches for both filers and tax pros alike.
There were a lot of temporary changes made to the child tax credit just for 2021. For starters, it was raised to $3,600 per child ages 5 and under, and to $3,000 per child ages 6 through 17.
It was also temporarily made fully refundable for 2021, meaning you can get the maximum amount of the credit even if it exceeds your federal income tax liability.
But heres where the real confusion comes in: The IRS likely has already sent you half the credit youre entitled to through monthly checks sent out between July and December.
You should have gotten a letter from the IRS in the past couple of months detailing what youve been paid already. Thats an amount you will need to report on your return. And then you will have to claim the other half of the credit youre owed, which you will get by way of a refund.
