Why The Irs Might Send You An Extra Refund What We Can Tell You

For most people still without the refunds, the IRS says the best course of action is to wait patientlyas it has already confirmed that it will automatically adjust tax returns if they qualify for the unemployment refund.

Here’s What You Need to Remember: Be aware that the IRS has already sent out more than eight million of the so-called plus-up or supplemental checks. These top-off funds, according to the agency, are for taxpayers who earlier in March received payments based on their 2019 tax returns but are eligible for a new or larger payment based on their recently processed 2020 tax returns.

Much like the frustrations some Americans had to endure in getting their hands on the coronavirusstimulus checks under President Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan, those who are still waiting for their refunds from 2020 unemployment benefits are also voicing their complaints.

But after weeks of making their unfortunate situation known in interviews and on social media platforms like , the Internal Revenue Service finally came through in a big way recently by disbursing nearly three million refunds to eligible Americans.

Because the occurred after some people filed their taxes, the IRS will take steps in the spring and summer to make the appropriate change to their return, which may result in a refund, the IRS stated.

The IRS plans to issue the next set of refunds in mid-June, the agency said.

Get A Larger Tax Refund Next Year

If you want a bigger tax refund next year, then there are a few ways you can increase the amount of money the government will give you as a tax refund. One of the easiest ways is by contributing to a tax-deferred retirement plan such as a 401k, the Thrift Savings Plan, or by opening a Traditional IRA, which allows you to deduct up to an additional $5,500 on your taxes each year . You can open an IRA in a variety of locations, including banks, brokerage firms, independent advisors, and more.

Wrong Numbers For Credits Delay Refunds

Taxpayers who waited until the last minute to file a return this year could be better off filing an extension if they’re concerned that they don’t have the accurate numbers for how much money they received for the stimulus payment issued in 2021 or for the advance payments for the child tax credit that went out from July through December last year.

You want to take extra time to review both the recovery rebate credit and the child tax credit to avoid potential mistakes that could lead to long delays of your refund.

The IRS sent out more than 250 million letters to help taxpayers match their IRS records for the third stimulus payment issued last year and the monthly payments for the advance child tax credit issued from July through December, according to Rettig’s testimony.

The IRS mailed Letter 6419 to explain child tax credit benefits received in 2021.

The IRS mailed Letter 6475 to explain the stimulus money received in 2021.

This year, Rettig said the IRS employed new tools to help its employees review and process tax returns that include errors and require manual reviews. The effort, he said, a is “already helping taxpayers receive refunds quicker in 2022.”

He noted that the IRS is working through last year’s backlog and issuing refunds for tax returns and amended tax returns in the inventory.

Factors That Affect Timing

The IRS has announced that tax season for filing 2018 returns will ...

As you can see, choosing electronic filing of your income tax return and direct deposit will considerably speed up the refund process. Before e-filing was available, tax returns had to be mailed to the IRS where the information was scanned or manually entered into the system. Then the IRS issued paper checks that had to be mailed to taxpayers. This manual process could take up to two months, keeping many people anxiously waiting by their mailboxes for weeks.

According to the IRS, refunds can be issued to taxpayers by direct deposit as soon as eight days after tax returns are filed. Meanwhile, nine out of 10 taxpayers choosing direct deposit receive their refunds within 21 days of the date they file electronically. Keep in mind that it may take an extra few days for your bank to make funds available to you after the refund is issued electronically.

You can still file your income taxes the old-fashioned way by mailing in your return and receiving a paper check if you prefer. However, you wont receive your tax refund nearly as quickly.

    When Are Taxes Due

Last year was a unique year for taxes, with the IRS automatically extending the tax filing deadline and the date federal income tax payments were due. There is a similar delay this year.

The tax filing deadline for the 2020 tax year is May 17, 2021.

The tax filing deadline was extended until May 17, 2021 due to the pandemic. This gives taxpayers an additional month in which to complete and file their tax returns.

You can file a tax extension if you are not ready to file your taxes by the deadline. The tax deadline when you file an extension is October 15th, however, any federal income tax payments are due by the original tax filing deadline. It is recommended to make an estimated tax payment prior to April 15th if you believe you will owe federal taxes.

When Do The Irs Start Sending Out Returns

IRS| IRS Is Sending Out Refund Payments 2021

For 2017 returns, the IRS will begin accepting e-file returns on January 29, 2018.

If you file your return in TurboTax before January 29, we’ll hold your return and submit it at that time.

Note: If your return is among those that the IRS processes early as part of its testing, your tax refund won’t be processed until after January 29. The IRS states that it can take up to 21 days for refunds to be issued via direct deposit once the return has been accepted and processed. The individual state’s payment of direct deposit refunds vary. The best place to find that information is on your specific state’s department of revenue website.

Taxpayers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit may experience a refund hold. According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act, the IRS cannot issue these refunds before mid-February. The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or debit cards starting February 27, 2018, if these taxpayers chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.

Tax Filing Season Begins Jan 24 Irs Outlines Refund Timing And What To Expect In Advance Of April 18 Tax Deadline

  • IRS Statements and Announcements
  • IR-2022-08, January 10, 2022

WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation’s tax season will start on Monday, January 24, 2022, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2021 tax year returns.

The January 24 start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to perform programming and testing that is critical to ensuring IRS systems run smoothly. Updated programming helps ensure that eligible people can claim the proper amount of the Child Tax Credit after comparing their 2021 advance credits and claim any remaining stimulus money as a Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2021 tax return.

“Planning for the nation’s filing season process is a massive undertaking, and IRS teams have been working non-stop these past several months to prepare,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “The pandemic continues to create challenges, but the IRS reminds people there are important steps they can take to help ensure their tax return and refund don’t face processing delays. Filing electronically with direct deposit and avoiding a paper tax return is more important than ever this year. And we urge extra attention to those who received an Economic Impact Payment or an advance Child Tax Credit last year. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays.”

Why Might Your Refund Be Delayed

There are several reasons your refund may end up delayed beyond the way you sent your return or receive the refund. Some of these reasons include:

    • Inaccurate information in your tax returns, including personal information or mathematical errors in taxes owed that requires fixing
    • Inaccurate direct deposit information
    • You claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act states that in this case the IRS cannot issue you a refund until mid-February at the earliest. If you filed your taxes in late January and claimed one of these tax credits, you may still be waiting.
    • The IRS has suspicion of identity theft
    • Filing late in the tax season when the IRS is receiving the most amount of tax returns
    • You have a form of debt that allows the IRS to withhold your refund.

When Will The Irs Issue Tax Refunds In 2022

The IRS says that it typically issues refunds in 21 days or less after accepting your return. However, if you’re planning on claiming the CTC or the EITC for 2021, your acceptance date could be delayed since these are the credits that are most often taken advantage of.

When you file a tax return and claim either the CTC or EITC, the IRS spends more time verifying the information to ensure that it’s accurate. Approximately 35 million families received CTC payments, which means that they might have to wait longer than others for the IRS to start accepting their 2021 returns.
