Max Out Your 401 By Dec 31
Contributions to a traditional 401 reduce your total taxable income for the year.
For example, lets say you make $65,000 a year and put $19,500 into your 401. Instead of paying income taxes on the entire $65,000 you earned, youll only owe taxes on $45,500 of your salary. In other words, saving for the future lets you shield $19,500 from taxes . Many employers offer to match a portion of what you save, meaning that if you contribute enough to your account, you’ll also nab some free money.
What If I Don’t Have The Money To Pay
If you do not have the money to pay your income tax due, then, you generally must file your income tax return without a payment. Once the IRS and state DOR have processed your income tax return, you can request a payment schedule from them by mail-in form or by phone.

When Is Tax Day 2022
The deadline for filing your 2021 taxes is April 18, 2022. Typically, April 15 is designated by the U.S. government as the day taxes are due every year. April 16 is Emancipation Day in Washington, and since it falls on a Saturday this year, the holiday will be officially observed on the closest weekday, April 15.
With few exceptions, Tax Day in the United States has fallen on the same date since 1955: April 15. And while the IRS extended the filing and payment deadlines for the 2019 and 2020 tax years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, dont expect any extra time to pay and submit your 2021 return.
The IRS began accepting and processing 2021 tax returns toward the end of January.
Given the rule changes going into effect in 2022 as well as potentially complicating factors, like this years expanded child tax credit payments and repayment of deferred Social Security taxes, taxpayers have even more incentive to get moving on their 2021 returns.

As in past years, you can request an extension if you need more time to prepare and file your 2021 return. What If My Company Uses A Different Tax Calendar
If your company doesnât use the calendar year and instead follows its own fiscal year, your tax return is due on the 15th day of the 4th month after the end of the corporationâs tax year. So, for example, if your companyâs fiscal year ends on February 1st, your 1120 deadline is May 15th.

When Are Taxes Due Each Year
Though dates can differ due to holidays and other things, federal tax deadlines are typically predictable. Continue reading to learn what the deadlines are for personal and business taxes and why those dates might change.
Personal Taxes Most years, the deadline to file personal taxes in the United States is April 15. However, this deadline may change due to holidays. For instance, in 2016, Emancipation Day fell on April 16, a Saturday. Washington D.C. celebrates Emancipation Day, but in order to be properly observed, it cannot fall on a weekend day. Thus, the federal celebration of Emancipation Day was moved to Friday, April 15. Tax Daythe day that taxes are duecannot fall on a weekend day either, so this year it was moved to April 18, the Monday following the day it would have been celebrated if not for Emancipation Day. In 2021, Tax Day will fall on Thursday, April 15th.
In short, personal taxes are usually due on April 15 unless Emancipation Day causes the deadline to be moved. IRS.gov is a great place to check whether the personal tax deadline is any day other than April 15th.
S-corporations and C-corporations that use the calendar year as their fiscal calendar must pay taxes a whole month earlier than most people. This year, that day fell on March 15. The general rule is that whatever fiscal year your corporation is using, taxes are due on the 15th day of the third month of the fiscal year.

What If You Miss A Deadline
You’ll probably be hit with a financial penalty, such as an extra interest charge, if you don’t submit a tax return and make any payment that is due by its appropriate deadline. There are two main penalties you may face:
- Failure-to-file penalty:This penalty for 1040 returns is 5% of the tax due per month as of tax year 2021, up to a cap of 25% overall, with additional fees piling up after 60 days.
- Failure-to-paypenalty: This penalty is 0.5% for each month, or part of a month, up to a maximum of 25%, of the amount of tax that remains unpaid from the due date of the return until the tax is paid in full.
If both are penalties are applied, the failure-to-file penalty will be reduced by the failure-to-pay penalty amount for that month. If you are on a payment plan, the failure-to-pay penalty is reduced to 0.25% per month during that payment plan schedule. If you don’t pay the taxes you owe within 10 days of receiving a notice from the IRS that says the agency intends to levy, then the failure-to-pay penalty is 1% per month.
Generally, interest accrues on any unpaid tax from the due date of the return until the date of payment in full. To avoid fees and required payments, the IRS recommends you should file your return as soon as possible if you miss a deadline.
When Are Estimated Taxes Due In 2022
Those who pay estimated taxes have a slightly different filing schedule than everyone else. People who pay quarterly estimated taxes include the self-employed, as well as those who work similar entrepreneurial or independent contractor jobs. If your paycheck doesnt have income taxes taken out before the money gets to you, then this requirement applies to you.
Estimated taxes are due quarterly and must be submitted with Form 1040-ES. Heres when those payments are due:
- First-quarter payments: April 18, 2022
- Second-quarter payments: June 15, 2022
- Third-quarter payments: Sept. 15, 2022
- Fourth-quarter payments: Jan. 17, 2023
Note: Like Tax Day, quarterly tax payments are due on April 18 this year. But because Jan. 15, 2023, is a Sunday, and Monday, Jan. 16 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day , the deadline to pay estimated taxes on the self-employment income you earn in the fourth quarter of 2022 has been pushed to Jan. 17, 2023.
This is the standard schedule to follow, provided nothing interferes.

Many people still think that their returns are due by April 15. Please be reminded that this is the US tax filing deadline.
