How To Change A Return

How Do I Send My Taxes By Mail?| TCC
COVID-19: Expect the normal timeframe for processing adjustment requests submitted by paper to be 10-12 weeks in most cases.

You can request a change to your tax return by amending specific line of your return. Do not file another return for that year, unless the return you want to amend was a 152 factual assessment.

Wait until you receive your notice of assessment before asking for changes.

Generally you can only request a change to a return for a tax year ending in any of the 10 previous calendar years. For example, a request made in 2021 must relate to the 2011 or a later tax year to be considered.

Protect Yourself From Tax

Tax ID theft occurs when someone steals your personal information to file a tax return using your personal data. Usually, the fraudulent tax filer will use your Social Security number to file your return in order to collect a refund. To protect yourself from tax ID theft, you can obtain a six-digit Identity Protection PIN from the IRS. IP PINs are known only to you and the IRS so the IRS is able to confirm your identity when you file your return. Learn more about how the IP PIN works and how to apply.

You May Face A Delay If You Claim These Tax Credits

There are a couple of issues that could cause delays, even if you do everything correctly.

The IRS notes that it can’t issue a refund that involves the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit before mid-February. “The law provides this additional time to help the IRS stop fraudulent refunds from being issued,” the agency said this week.

That means if you file as soon as possible on January 24, you still might not receive a refund within the 21-day time frame if your tax return involves either of those tax credits. In fact, the IRS is informing those who claim these credits that they will most likely receive their refunds in early March, assuming they filed their returns on January 24 or close to that date.

The reason relates to a 2015 law that slows refunds for people who claim these credits, which was designed as a measure to combat fraudsters who rely on identity theft to grab taxpayer’s refunds.

With reporting by the Associated Press.

What This Letter Is About

The IRS began issuing Letter 6475, Economic Impact Payment 3 End of Year, in January 2022.

This letter helps EIP recipients determine if theyre eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax year returns. This letter provides the total amount of the third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments received for tax year 2021. For married individuals filing a joint return, each spouse will receive their own letter showing half of the total amount.

Letter 6475 only applies to the third round of EIP issued between March 2021 and December 2021. This includes plus-up payments.

Plus-up payments were additional EIP 3 payments the IRS sent to people who:

  • Received a third Economic Impact Payment based on a 2019 tax return or information receive from Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board or Veterans Administration, and
  • Were eligible for an additional amount based on their 2020 tax return

Most eligible people already received the full amount they are entitled to receive. Anyone who did not receive the full amount they are entitled to should review the payment information to determine whether they should claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for tax year 2021.
