Easy Ways To Pay Taxes
IRS Tax Tip 2018-87, June 6, 2018
The IRS offers several payment options where taxpayers can pay immediately or arrange to pay in installments. Taxpayers should not ignore a bill from the IRS because as more time passes, interest and penalties accumulate.
Here are some ways to make payments:
- Direct Pay. Taxpayers can pay tax bills directly from a checking or savings account free with IRS Direct Pay. Taxpayers receive instant confirmation once theyve made a payment. With Direct Pay, taxpayers can schedule payments up to 30 days in advance. They can change or cancel a payment two business days before the scheduled payment date.
- Taxpayers can also pay their taxes by debit or credit card online, by phone or with a mobile device. The IRS does not charge a fee, but convenience fees apply and vary depending on the card used.
- Installment agreement. Taxpayers who are unable to pay their tax debt immediately may be able to make monthly payments. Before applying for any payment agreement, taxpayers must file all required tax returns. They can apply for an installment agreement with the Online Payment Agreement tool, which also has more information about whos eligible to apply for a monthly installment agreement.
Balance Owing On Your Tax Return
If you have an amount on line 48500, you have a balance owing.
Your 2020 balance owing is due on or before .
You should file your tax return, pay any amounts you owe, or make a post-dated payment to cover your balance owing by the due date to avoid paying interest and late-filing penalties. If your balance owing is $2 or less, you do not have to make a payment.
How To Use Irs Direct Pay To Pay Your Taxes Online
I want to dig into IRS Direct Pay a little deeper and offers a good combo of ease of use and trackability. Direct Pay allows you to make a simple bank payment online without the hassle of creating an account as you must do with the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System . This is kind of a big deal, because it can take weeks for the IRS to verify new EFTPS accounts, and once verified, they are reportedly difficult to use.
Another big benefit of Direct Pay is that your bank account information is not stored rather, it is only used to process your payment.
In order to use IRS Direct Pay:
On the last one, Id recommend writing your confirmation number down or doing a Print, save as PDF so you have record. With the confirmation number handy, you can cover yourself and also look up a Direct Pay payment later on, if needed.
Note: payments typically take 2 days to process. Also, businesses cannot pay taxes online using Direct Pay they must use EFTPS.
Which method will you use or have you previously used to pay your taxes online with the IRS? And why?

Are There Options To Pay My Taxes Online
There are several methods to paying your taxes online. Some are for one-time payments, while others help those with installment plans.
Direct pay: Without a doubt, this is the IRSs preferred method of payment from taxpayers. This service is a direct debit from your checking or savings account to pay any taxes owed. Theres no fee, no check to write. Simply provide your personal information and the routing and account numbers from your checking or savings account, and the payment will be withdrawn from your bank.
Direct pay is available through 1040.com when you file your return. This payment option does not save your banking information.
Paying with debit or credit cards: If youre paying taxes owed with a debit or credit card, youll have to pay through a third-party website. Sites like www.1040PayTax.com can help you make your card payment quickly and efficiently. Some states also allow their tax payments through these sites. Standard card processing fees apply. Youll need to know any forms and the year or quarter youre paying for. You can also set up payments for installment plans through the third-party websites.
This option is also available when you finish your return on 1040.com. If you want to pay your balance due by credit card, you can do that by selecting the credit card option when you file. After you e-file your return, youll be given a link that will take you the IRS site where you can enter your credit card information to pay your balance due to the IRS.
With Electronic Funds Withdrawal
You can usually set up a direct debit from your checking account if you use tax preparation software to e-file your return, either on your own or through a tax professional. This option involves entering your bank account and routing numbers into the program, but it’s only available to taxpayers who e-file.

If You Need An Extension Of Time To File
Some taxpayers might find that they can’t make the tax filing date. You can typically take an extension by filing Form 4868 with the IRS by the tax filing deadline, giving you until Oct. 15 to submit your return. Any payments you owe are still due by the original tax due date, however, which is usually April 15. You should submit your tax payment along with your extension request.
You’ll receive a refund if you remit too much, but you’ll owe the IRS more if you later complete your return only to realize that you’ve underpaid for the year.
The IRS extended the tax filing date for personal income tax payments from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. It then extended the six-month extension deadline from Oct. 15, 2021 to Jan. 3, 2022 for victims of Hurricane Ida in Louisiana, and in some New York and New Jersey counties as well. Residents of all 82 Mississippi Counties and the Mississippi Choctaw Indian Reservation have until Nov. 1, 2021 to file any returns or make any payments that were due after Aug. 28, 2021. Affected residents of New Jersey and New York don’t get an extension on any tax payments due on their 2020 returns, however. You can check to see if your county is eligible at DisasterAssistance.gov.
You can ask the IRS to work with you and set up a payment plan if you have difficulty paying the full amount of tax you owe.

As a private individual, you now have the option of paying your tax notices and invoices by bank card or in cash, up to a limit of 300, at tobacconists and approved partners.
Paying in cash or by bank card at a tobacconist
There is a 300 limit on in-person payments if you are paying in cash or if it is in relation to a tax notice.
To find out if this option is available for you, check whether your tax notice or invoice includes a QR code for in-person payments and mentions the option of paying in cash or by bank card at a tobacconist or approved partner.
As long as the balance owing is under 300, this payment option is available for individual taxes owed by non-residents . You can, however, use the QR code to make an online payment via the impots.gouv.fr application using your smartphone or tablet.

If you are a non-resident, you must settle these fees at the Non-Residents Tax Collection Office either by bank card or, for amounts under 300, in cash. If you opt for in-person payment :

– It is possible to make partial payments in cash or by bank card. Cheques are not accepted.
