Is Credit Karma Safe To File Taxes

Don't Miss

Are There Any Downsides To Using Credit Karma

Credit Karma Tax Prep

If you lived in multiple states, earned foreign income during the tax year, or are claiming the earned income tax credit with no dependents, Credit Karma Tax does not support your tax-filing needs. There are also a few other, less-common forms and schedules that are not supported.

Also, Credit Karma’s simple tax preparation interface doesn’t walk you through every tax form. This can be good for people who want a streamlined experience and don’t want to spend time clicking through non-relevant forms, but it can cause non-experienced filers to miss some deductions or important data entry.

Lastly, Credit Karma Tax doesn’t connect filers with tax experts for personalized help. H& R Block, TurboTax, and TaxAct all offer this feature for an additional cost.

Who Can Use Credit Karma Tax For Free

Often, free tax offerings are limited to the very basic kinds of tax returns. This was another trick of TurboTax, TaxCut, and the like. If you were filling out a 1040-EZ, then your taxes were totally free. Of course, filling out a 1040-EZ takes about 10 minutes and isnt at all complicated, so it wasnt worth much. According to Credit Karma they support a pretty wide range of tax returns, so lets start with what forms Credit Karma does not support when using Credit Karma taxes.

You cannot do your taxes on CreditKarma if you:

  • Need to do multi-state or part-year state filing This should only really matter if you moved or happen to split time between two states. This is much more common in the Northeast where the states are pretty small, and someone can realistically work/live across state lines.
  • Need to report Foreign Income This can get tricky fast, so I dont blame them here.
  • Need to file Married Filing Separately, in community property states. I cant claim to have any knowledge about what the deal is with this, but if it sounds like you, dont use Credit Karma tax to do your taxes.
  • Youre also out of luck if you need to file a 1040-PR for residing in Puerto Rico.

I pulled up my taxes from last year, and while my return isnt super complicated, I am usually forced to buy higher-end versions of tax software to complete my taxes. I did find that Credit Karma says it supports all of the Forms I used to file my taxes last year.

Is 700 A Good Credit Score

FICO credit scores, the industry standard for sizing up credit risk, range from 300 to a perfect 850with 670 to 739 labeled good, 740-799 very good and 800 to 850 exceptional. A 700 score places you right in the middle of the good range, but still slightly below the average credit score of 711.

Negatives In Using Credit Karma

Credit Karma offering truly free tax filing in 2017

But there is one downside to Credit Karma. They only give you access to your credit score and report from two of the three major credit bureaus. You can access TransUnion and Equifax credit reports, but not Experians.

In most cases, any changes to your Credit get reported to all three credit agencies. But there is a chance something could only go to one report, and so I would suggest pulling up Experians credit report once per year from AnnualCreditReport.com. This plan ensures that if there is some unique discrepancy with that credit report, you can catch the error.

Is this a big issue? Yes and no. Something unique could show up on Experians credit report, but in most cases, it will end up showing up in the other reports as well. But it is better to play it safe and cover your bases.

Outside of this one issue, Credit Karma is a fantastic service that is incredibly safe and reliable.

How To File With The Cash App

To use the app to file your taxes you will first need to download it and create an account. The company has assured that using the software is “100% free” for federal and state returns, even for filers who wish to claim credits and deductions.

To ensure confidence in the software, the site says that it will offer an Accurate Calculation Guarantee that states “If the IRS and/or applicable state tax authority imposes penalties and/or interest on you due to a Cash App Taxes calculation error, we will reimburse you up to a maximum of $1,000 in the form of gift card.”

Cash App has a price advantage over its competitors. Most services offer a variety of filing options, with different options giving you access to different forms. Theres often a free option, but to get the most features, you have to upgrade to a paid option. But competitors also tend to offer more features than Cash App.

One of the most popular tax planning services is TurboTax. Though more expensive than most services, TurboTax offers extensive features. It has four different online filing options that each target different individuals. For example, TurboTaxs Self-Employed filing option caters to contractors, freelancers, small business owners and other self-employed filers. This specialization is useful for people who have complex returns. If you have a simple return, you may qualify for the free filing option, which allows you to file your federal and one state return for free.

The big caveat with TurboTax is the cost. It offers a lot of features, but that comes at a cost. Filers who have very simple returns or who understand taxes pretty well and feel comfortable doing their own research may not want to pay so much to file their taxes.

As a small business owner, no Credit Karma tax review is complete without knowing if I can even use it. This is where most free tax offerings bail out. But what about security? And can electronic filing really give you access to all the forms you might need if you have a complex tax situation? Are there ever situations when you cant e-file? Lets look at the advantages of e-filing, and whether it might be the best filing option for your needs.

What Could Happen If I Dont File Back Taxes

Why Do You Have To File Tax Returns

If you have a steady job with an employer, youre actually probably already paying taxes each time you get a paycheck. Your employer withholds a certain amount from every paycheck to pay income tax based on what youre likely to owe. If youre self-employed, you should have paid quarterly taxes throughout the year. However, many factors influence what youll potentially owe, so when tax time rolls around, its possible youve overpaid or underpaid.

Filing your tax return is what calculates the total taxes you owe the government the amount of deductions, credits, or tax breaks you qualify for and how much youve already paid. If it turns out youve paid more than you owe, youll get a tax refund to repay the overage. If you havent paid enough, youll have to pay the difference.
