What Time Is Tax Deadline

What If You Owe Taxes

Theres another strong incentive to do your taxes on time: avoiding penalties and interest.

If youre late turning in your 2020 tax return and owe taxes, the CRA will charge you a late-filing penalty thats five per cent of your 2020 tax balance, plus another one per cent of your balance for each month your return is late, to a maximum of 12 months. On top of that, the tax agency will charge compound daily interest on your unpaid 2020 taxes, also starting May 1, 2021.

Sticking your head in the sand is not a good option, Ahmed-Haq says. Owing money to the CRA is very expensive.

The good news is the CRA said it wont be charging interest on 2020 taxes owing if your taxable income is $75,000 or less and you received one or more COVID-19 benefits in 2020. The interest relief will be in place until April 30, 2022, the tax agency said.

However, you still have to file your 2020 return by the deadline to avoid the late-filing penalty. Also note that the interest relief only applies to any 2020 taxes owing, not tax debt from previous years.

If you dont qualify for interest relief and cant pay your tax bill in full by April 30, the CRA expects you to put in your best effort to find the funds to pay the government, including by borrowing the money, Ahmed-Haq says.

The Governments Time To Pay Scheme For Self Assessment Tax Bills For Tax Year Ended 5th April 2020

As highlighted in our introduction, HMRC has taken action to support businesses as the economy recovers from the coronavirus pandemic. If you need additional time to pay your Self Assessment tax bill, you can use HMRCâs âTime to Payâ service through GOV.UK to set up a direct debit and pay any tax that is owed in monthly instalments as agreed with HMRC.

If you wish to set up your own self-serve âTime to Payâ, you must meet the following requirements for the 2020/21 tax year:

  • no outstanding tax returns
  • no other HMRC payments set up
  • your Self Assessment tax bill is between £32 and £30,000
  • it is no more than 60 days since the tax was due for payment.

If you do not meet these requirements, or need longer to pay in full, you may still be able to set up a âTime to Payâ arrangement by calling the HMRC Self Assessment payment helpline on 0300 200 3822 or going online to the âIf you cannot pay your tax bill on timeâ page on the gov.uk website.

If you set up a âTime to Payâ arrangement, you will have to pay interest on the tax paid late. Interest will be applied to any outstanding balance from 1st February 2022 for tax bills due for the 2020/21 tax year.

Failure To Pay Penalty

The failure to pay penalty also adds money onto your tax bill if you file and pay late. Working like the failure to file penalty, it adds 0.5% onto your tax bill for each month your payment is late. This penalty wont apply to you if your tax bill is $0 or you are due a refund.

If you pay and file your taxes late, the combined penalty for failure to pay and file is 5% each month your taxes are late. This breaks down to 4.5% for filing late and 0.5% for paying late. This will max out at 47.5% of your tax bill .

How Does It Normally Work

The annual deadline for submitting your online Self Assessment and paying any tax owed is midnight on 31st January each year. While most self-employed people these days choose to file their Self Assessments online, itâs still possible to do so the old way â via paper forms.

Be warned though, if you submit a paper tax return, the deadline is earlier and HMRC must receive this by 31st October each year.

If you donât file your return and pay any tax due on time, youâll face penalties â and there are potential extra penalties.

So donât delay submitting before the deadline and pay any tax you owe with whatever information you have available â even if you need to subsequently amend your tax return.

Why Might A Tax Extension Request Be Rejected

Nine times out of ten, if you file on time and fill out the form correctly, you should have no issue getting an extension.

In most cases, applications are rejected for minor discrepancies that can easily be rectified. If it comes down to a misspelling or providing information that doesn’t corroborate with IRS records, the tax authority will usually give you a few days to sort out those errors and get the form filed againthis time accurately.

The IRS tends to take less kindly to unrealistic tax liability estimates. If it disagrees with your figures, your application for an extension may be denied and you could even be hit with a penalty.

More Time To File Not More Time To Pay

Deadline approaching to file tax return

Its important to remember that the Form 4868 extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. You will still have to pay your taxes by that year’s original due date, even if the IRS grants an extension to file later.

If you think you may owe taxes when it comes time to file your return, you should estimate how much you will owe and subtract any taxes that you have already paid . If your estimate is on the high side and you end up overpaying, you will get a refund when you eventually file your return. You’ll also avoid potential penalties and interest accumulating, which is what can happen if you underestimate your taxes due.

When you file Form 4868, youll need to pay the estimated income tax you owe. Sometimes it’s better to be overly generousyoull get refunded anyway and underestimates increase the risk of paying interest on money owed.

You can pay part or all of your estimated income tax online using a debit or credit card or through an electronic funds transfer using Direct Pay. It’s also possible to mail a check or money order to make your tax payment, even if you file electronically. Make the check or money order payable to United States Treasury and include a completed Form 4868 to use as a voucher.

You do not need to file a paper Form 4868 if you submitted one electronically and are not mailing a payment.

What Happens If I Miss The Tax Return Deadline

If you fail to submit your tax return on time, you could receive the following penalties:

  • If you pay later than three months after the deadline, you could be penalised up to £1,000
  • If you pay your tax bill between six and 12 months late, you may have to pay an additional £300 on top of your earlier fines. In some cases, you may be fined 5% of your tax bill, which can be more expensive

Suspension Of Late Filing Tax Penalties For The 2020/21 Tax Year Until 28th February 2022

HMRC is waiving late filing and late payment penalties for Self-Assessment taxpayers for one month. This means you can file your Self-Assessment tax return for the 2020/21 tax year and pay any tax due by 28th February 2022 and you wonât receive a penalty.

HMRC does encourage taxpayers to meet the deadline to file and pay any tax due by 31st January 2022 if they can.

The penalty waivers mean that:

  • anyone who cannot file their return by the 31st January deadline will not receive a late filing penalty if they file online by 28th February 2022
  • anyone who cannot pay their Self Assessment tax bill by 31st January 2022 deadline will not receive a late payment penalty if they pay their tax in full, or set up a Time to Pay arrangement, by 1st April 2022.

Interest will be payable from 1st February, as usual, so it is still better to pay on time if you can.

If you cannot afford to pay your latest bill then you can set up a âTime to Payâ payment plan with HMRC to spread the cost of your latest Self -Assessment bill if all the following apply:

  • you owe £30,000 or less
  • you do not have any other payment plans or debts with HMRC
  • your tax returns are up to date
  • itâs less than 60 days after the payment deadline.

You can choose how much to pay straight away and how much you want to pay each month, including any interest due.

Why Filing On Time Is Better

Even if you cannot pay your taxes on time, you should file your tax return before or on May 2, 2022. The CRA does not charge a late-filing penalty when the tax return is filed on time but without payment. Though you are required to pay interest payments on the balance owing for each month after the deadline.

Lets say your taxes for the year were $1,000, but you couldnt pay your taxes on or before May 2, 2022, so you filed the tax return on time and planned to pay the entire amount one month after the deadline. Youll only have to pay compounded interest of $51.27 for late tax payment.

The CRA can cancel and waive penalties or interest for taxpayers who couldnt file or pay taxes due to circumstances that were beyond their control.

IRS extends federal tax filing deadline but states may differ

In some cases, yes. US expats have the opportunity to file late returns without worrying about late fees and other penalties using specific procedures designed for American taxpayers outside the US. Since many US expats dont know theyre on the hook for filing taxes, the IRS offers two ways to make filing a little easier for them: the Streamlined Procedure and the first-time penalty abatement. The Streamlined Procedure is designed to help expats catch up on past-due tax returns, while the first-time penalty abatement can help all US taxpayers avoid late fees.

The time to file your 2021 tax return or a tax extension has nearly expired.

Monday is your final opportunity to complete and file your 2021 tax return on time . Midnight — in your local time zone — marks the deadline for electronically filing or postmarking a tax return.

If you can’t complete and file your tax return by Monday, you’ll want to file a tax extension, particularly if you owe. The IRS could charge a 5% failure to file penalty, plus additional interest and fines on top of that. Free tax software like Cash App Taxes can help you file an extension as well as finish your return. If you are expecting a refund, there’s no penalty for filing late.

Most state income tax returns are also due on April 18, although a handful of states have different deadlines. And, of course, some states don’t require you to file income taxes at all.
