What If I Owe More Than I Can Pay

IRS will delay 2021 tax filing due date until May 17| ABC7

This year, many people are dealing with financial troubles due to the pandemic, job loss and other factors. If you’re one of them, you may not have the funds available to pay your tax bill by the deadline. But don’t put off filing just because you can’t afford to pay the amount due on the day you need to file your tax return. The IRS starts charging penalties and interest on the day the return is due, no matter when you file. You can minimize the failure-to-file penalties by filing as soon as possible, paying as much as you can when you file and setting up an installment plan for the balance.

What If I Made A Mistake And Need To Refile My Taxes

It happens. You file your tax return, then realize you forgot to report some income or claim a certain tax credit. You don’t need to redo your whole return. Simply file an amendment using Form 1040X.

IRS Form 1040X is a two-page form used to amend a previously filed tax return. TurboTax can walk you through the amendment process and, beginning with the 2019 tax year, even e-file your amended tax return for you.

Tax Filing Deadline For Maine And Massachusetts Residents

Residents of Maine and Massachusetts get an extra day until April 19 to file their federal income tax return. Why? Because Patriots’ Day, an official holiday in Maine and Massachusetts that commemorates Revolutionary War battles, falls on April 18 this year. So, for the same reason Tax Day is moved from April 15 to April 18 for most people , the IRS can’t set the tax filing and payment due date on April 18 for taxpayers in those two states. As a result, the deadline is shifted to the next business day for Maine and Massachusetts residents, which is April 19.

When To Expect Your Refund

If you file your return electronically, the IRS says your refund should be issued in less than three weeks and faster when you choose direct deposit.

If you file a paper return, you can expect to wait between six and eight weeks to issue a refund.

Filing during the peak of tax season usually results in a longer wait time. So if you need your refund quickly, try to file as early as possible.

Max Out Your 401 By Dec 31

Contributions to a traditional 401 reduce your total taxable income for the year.

For example, lets say you make $65,000 a year and put $19,500 into your 401. Instead of paying income taxes on the entire $65,000 you earned, youll only owe taxes on $45,500 of your salary. In other words, saving for the future lets you shield $19,500 from taxes . Many employers offer to match a portion of what you save, meaning that if you contribute enough to your account, you’ll also nab some free money.

The Federal Income Tax Filing Deadline Is April 18

IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig discussed the chance of a filing deadline extension during a 2022 tax season that could get bumpy.

Tax season started Monday, marking the third time people are filing their income taxes and waiting for a refund amid the pandemic.

In 2020, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service pushed the traditional April 15 filing deadline to

In 2021, officials eventually set the deadline at May 17 after first

So whats the chance for a breather from the April 18 deadline thats currently set for the 2022 season? Theres no intent right now to push back the deadline, IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig said Monday.

Even as the IRS is bracing taxpayers, and its workers, for a potentially bumpy tax season, Rettig poured cold water on the idea of giving people and their tax preparers more time to pay up their 2021 federal tax bill and file a return.

But he didnt altogether snuff out the idea, because Rettig said the IRS will see how the tax season goes. We dont make that decision lightly either to extend it or not extend it. We share the same concerns everybody else has. We listen to a lot of people and we make a decision that we believe is best for the country, said Rettig.

To be clear, taxpayers can still seek an extension that would give them an Oct. 15 deadline to file their 2021 return, Rettig noted.

The average refund last year was more than $2,800.

Federal Income Tax Returns Are Due April 18 For Most Taxpayers But Some People Have A Little Extra Time Are You One Of Them

Most Americans must file their federal tax returns for the 2021 tax year by April 18, 2022. Note that we say “most Americans.” Taxpayers in two states have until April 19 to submit their 1040s to the IRS. Victims of certain natural disaster also get more time to file, with varying dates depending on when the disaster hit.

In any case, if for some reason you can’t file your federal tax return on time, it’s relatively easy to get an automatic six-month extension to October 17, 2022, by filing Form 4868 or making an electronic tax payment. But you must act by the original due date for your return, whether that’s April 18, April 19, or some other date.

Keep in mind, however, that an extension to file doesn’t extend the time to pay your tax. If you don’t pay up by the original due date, you’ll owe interest on the unpaid tax. You could also be hit with additional penalties for filing and paying late.

What Money Is Coming With My Tax Refund This Year

There are several things that could be tacked on to your tax refund this year. As usual, if you overpaid your taxes in 2021, you’ll receive that money back. However, if you’re a parent, you could also expect to receive the rest of your child tax credit money, as well as a reimbursement for money you spent on child care related expenses last year.

Also, if you’re still missing your third stimulus payment, you might receive that when you get your tax refund.

Weeks And Weeks Of Irs Delays

When are Taxes Due in 2021? Important Dates for Your Diary ...

Although the IRS says most refunds will be sent within 21 days, experts warn that delays are likely, noting that the agency is still working through 2020 tax returns.

During the 2020 budget year, the IRS processed more than 240 million tax returns and issued roughly $736 billion in refunds, including $268 billion in federal stimulus payments, according to the latest IRS data. Over that period roughly 60 million people called or visited an IRS office.

Donald Williamson, an accounting and taxation professor at American University in Washington, said he expects “weeks and weeks” of IRS delays in 2022. “My advice in 2022 is file early, get started tomorrow and try to put your taxes together with a qualified professional.”

Compounding the challenge, tax preparers told CBS MoneyWatch that it remains hard to reach IRS personnel on the phone. The IRS answered only about 1 in 9 taxpayer calls during fiscal year 2021, Collins reported. “Many taxpayers are not getting answers to their questions and are frustrated,” she noted.

“Back in the old days, you’d wait 5-10 minutes and get an IRS agent on the phone,” said Christian Cyr, a CPA and president and chief investment officer at Cyr Financial. But now, he said, his CPAs wait hours to speak with an IRS employee, with no guarantee of ever reaching one.

    1. File electronically

“Paper is the IRS’s Kryptonite, and the agency is still buried in it,” National Taxpayer Advocate Collins said on Wednesday.

    2. Get a refund via direct deposit
