Federal Income Tax Returns Are Due April 18 For Most Taxpayers But Some People Have A Little Extra Time Are You One Of Them

Most Americans must file their federal tax returns for the 2021 tax year by April 18, 2022. Note that we say “most Americans.” Taxpayers in two states have until April 19 to submit their 1040s to the IRS. Victims of certain natural disaster also get more time to file, with varying dates depending on when the disaster hit.

In any case, if for some reason you can’t file your federal tax return on time, it’s relatively easy to get an automatic six-month extension to October 17, 2022, by filing Form 4868 or making an electronic tax payment. But you must act by the original due date for your return, whether that’s April 18, April 19, or some other date.

Keep in mind, however, that an extension to file doesn’t extend the time to pay your tax. If you don’t pay up by the original due date, you’ll owe interest on the unpaid tax. You could also be hit with additional penalties for filing and paying late.

How To File Taxes In 7 Steps

While the method you choose to file your taxes can vary based on your income and how complicated your return is, here are seven steps that anyone can follow.

Step 1: Gather your paperwork. Before you prepare to file your taxes, you should gather all the paperwork youll need. This can include a W-2 form from your employer, earning and interest statements from investments and receipts for charitable donations and other write-offs if you plan to itemize.

Step 2: Decide how to file. While you can file a tax return through the mail, the IRS suggests filing online for faster processing and speedier refunds. You can also utilize a professional to help, take advantage of tax software or file using the time-honored paper and pen.

Step 3: Select the appropriate filing status. Your filing status will be based on whether youre single, married or head of your household, along with other less common tax situations. Youll also want to claim any dependents which is typically a qualifying child or relative as part of your return.

Step 4: Determine whether you are itemizing or taking the standard deduction. Most taxpayers with basic returns can use the standard deduction for 2021, which is $25,100 for married couples filing jointly and $12,550 for single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately.

Step 7: Finish the process by tax day. Submit your tax return by the tax deadline for your state to avoid potential penalties and interest.

What Happens If I Dont Send In My Tax Return

If you are sent a tax return, you are legally obliged to fill it in and send it back, even if you dont owe any tax . The only exception is if you can persuade HMRC to withdraw the tax return .

If you dont sent the return back you will be charged penalties and might be sent an estimated tax bill . Once a determination has been made HM Revenue and Customs is entitled to the tax due as set out on that determination and can collect it through the courts even to bankruptcy. The only way to cancel the debt is to send in a tax return to establish the correct amount of tax due.

What Could Cause A Refund Delay

There are countless reasons your tax refund could be delayed. Weve outlined some common instances where a delay could occur:

    • If you file a paper return, the IRS says you should allow about six weeks to receive your refund.
    • If the IRS mails you a physical check, you will receive a check through the mail.
    • If you file Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, it could take up to 14 weeks to process your tax return.
    • If your identity has been stolen and another return was filed with your social security number, it could take longer for the IRS to sort out the situation.
    • If you owe a debt, like unpaid child support, your refund could be offset to pay part or all of it.

Each of the possibilities above could cause a delay or prevent receiving the refund altogether. Its important to note that each individuals tax scenario is unique and no two filings are handled exactly the same.

What’s The Deadline For Filing An Extension

How to file a tax extension with the IRS in 2016

You still have to submit your request for an extension by April 18 . But you will have until Oct. 17, 2022, to file a completed 2021 tax return.

Keep in mind that filing an extension doesn’t push back when you need to pay the IRS: To avoid late penalties, you still need to submit an estimate of what you owe. An extension just gives you more time to complete your return.

Your state may have a different tax deadline than the IRS does.

Tax Filing Deadline For Maine And Massachusetts Residents

Residents of Maine and Massachusetts get an extra day until April 19 to file their federal income tax return. Why? Because Patriotsâ Day, an official holiday in Maine and Massachusetts that commemorates Revolutionary War battles, falls on April 18 this year. So, for the same reason Tax Day is moved from April 15 to April 18 for most people , the IRS canât set the tax filing and payment due date on April 18 for taxpayers in those two states. As a result, the deadline is shifted to the next business day for Maine and Massachusetts residents, which is April 19.

    When Your Child Should File

Your child should file a federal income tax return even though it isn’t required for the reasons above, if:

    • Incomes taxes were withheld from earnings
    • They qualify for the earned income credit
    • They owe recapture taxes
    • They want to open an IRA
    • You want your child to gain the educational experience of filing taxes.

In the first two cases, the main reason for filing would be to obtain a refund if one is due. The others are income-dependent or based on taking advantage of an opportunity to begin saving for retirement or to begin learning about personal finance.

How To File An Extension On Your Taxes

If youre not ready to file your taxes and youre running out of time, the IRS has a formal process for requesting an extension. However, the extension only gives you more time to file your tax return any taxes you owe are still due by April 18, 2022.

To qualify for an extension, taxpayers must take one of the following steps:

If you dont file your return or an extension request by the deadline, the failure to file penalty is 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that a tax return is late, up to a maximum of 25% of your unpaid taxes. And if you owe money and dont pay by the deadline, the failure to pay penalty is 0.5% of your unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that youre late, up to a maximum of 25% of what you owe. In either case, interest will be charged on the outstanding amount as well.

Notice that the monthly penalty for not filing is much higher than the penalty for not paying? Thats why its vital to get your return filed or request an extension by the deadline, even if you dont have the money to pay what you owe.
