What Doesnt The Tax Deadline Extension Apply To

Remember that the federal governments May 17 income tax deadline extension only applies to your federal taxes. Most states have left their normal tax deadlines in place, but five states have later tax filing deadlines.

If you need even more time to complete your 2020 federal returns you can request an extension to Oct. 15 by filing Form 4868 through your tax professional, tax software or using the Free File link on Filing Form 4868 gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file their 2021 tax return but does not grant an extension of time to pay taxes due. Taxpayers should pay their federal income tax due by May 17, 2021, to avoid interest and penalties.

If you mail in your return, it must be postmarked May 17 or sooner. Heres a tax refund schedule to give you an idea when to expect your refund after youve filed. If you cannot file your tax return by the deadline, you need to file for a tax extension by May 17, 2021.

You’ll probably be hit with a financial penalty, if only an extra interest charge, if you don’t submit a tax return and make any payment that’s due by its appropriate deadline. The late-filing penalty for a 1040 return is 5% of the tax due per month as of tax year 2020, up to a cap of 25% overall, with additional fees piling up after 60 days. What If You Cant Pay Your Taxes This Year

IRS Extending Federal Filing Deadline To Mid-May

Does your heart sink when you receive a piece of mail from the IRS?

Thats reason enough to dread tax season. I have a friend whose family always filed extensions on their taxes. This, of course, added to the stress of tax season. After April, 15th no one in her family would go to the mailbox.

My friend decided at age 18 she was fed up and wanted to start filing her own taxes. With a little help, she was able to prepare as soon as she received her tax documents. She never stressed again, because she had plenty of time to make adjustments.

If youre finding yourself asking What if I cant pay the taxes I owe by this years filing deadline? I can help! Here are a few guidelines for avoiding and reducing IRS interest, filing penalties, and underpayment penalties.

  • If you cant pay your taxes, file your tax return and pay as much as you can by the tax filing deadline.
  • Then, set up a payment plan with the IRS. Youll still have to pay interest and penalties, but this will significantly reduce the total amount youll owe.
  • Then make adjustments to your W-4 or quarterly tax payments so you can avoid owing taxes in the future.

Why You Might Want To File A Tax Return Anyway

You might want to file a return even if you’re not required to do so, if it will result in receiving a tax refundotherwise, you’re just letting the IRS keep that money. This would be the case if, for example, you had any taxes withheld from your income, such as withholding on wages or retirement plan distributions, so you overpaid your taxes because the income falls below these filing thresholdsno tax would be due. You’d be entitled to a refund of the money that was withheld, because you don’t have a tax liability.

Filing could also generate a tax refund if you’re eligible for one or more of the refundable tax credits, such as the Earned Income Credit, the Child Tax Credit, or the American Opportunity Tax Credit. You’d have to file a tax return to calculate and claim these credits and to request a refund from the IRS.

The IRS has certain time limits, called “statutes of limitations,” for issuing tax refunds, conducting audits, and collecting taxes that someone might owe. It generally has three years from the date a tax return is filed to begin an audit, and it has 10 years to collect a tax.

These time limits never begin running if a return isn’t filed, so the IRS would effectively have forever to look into your tax situation. Filing a return starts the clock ticking on these statutes of limitations.
