Itemized tax deductions give many American wage earners a chance to pocket more income, rather than hand over their hard-earned cash to the government. For those who keep good records, deductions have long meant more money for them and less for the Internal Revenue Service .
American Opportunity Tax Credit
The AOTC is worth up to $2,500 per student and is available for education expenses from your first four years of higher education. Qualifying education expenses include tuition, books and classroom supplies. You can include these expenses even if you didnât pay them directly to the school. The credit begins to phase out once your gross income reaches $90,000 or $180,000 . Claim the AOTC by completing Form 1040 Schedule 3 and Form 8863.
Health Insurance Premiums Deduction
If you are self-employed, pay for your health insurance premiums, and are not eligible to participate in a plan through your spouses employer, then you can deduct all of your health, dental, and qualified long-term care insurance premiums.
You can also deduct premiums that you paid to provide coverage for your spouse, your dependents, and your children who were younger than 27 at years end, even if they arent dependents on your taxes. Calculate the deduction using the Self-Employed Health Insurance Deduction Worksheet in IRS Publication 535.

Medical And Dental Expenses
Even with insurance, you might have to pay for medical expenses out of pocket. You can deduct these expenses for you, your spouse or any of your dependents, as long as the total amount exceeds 7.5% of your AGI. Possible expenses include:

How To Calculate The Home Office Deduction
You have two choices for calculating your home office deductionthe standard method or the simplified optionand you dont have to use the same method every year. The standard method requires you to calculate your actual home office expenses and keep detailed records in the event of an audit.
The simplified option lets you multiply an IRS-determined rate by your home office square footage. To use the simplified option, your home office must not be larger than 300 square feet, and you cannot deduct depreciation or home-related itemized deductions.
The simplified option is a clear choice if youre pressed for time or cant pull together good records of your deductible home office expenses. However, because the simplified option is calculated as $5 per square foot, with a maximum of 300 square feet, the most that youll be able to deduct is $1,500.
If you want to maximize your home office deduction, youll want to calculate the deduction using both the regular and simplified methods to find out which one will give you the greater benefit. If you choose the regular method, calculate the deduction using IRS Form 8829, Expenses for Business Use of Your Home.
Repayment Of Supplemental Unemployment Benefits
Unemployment benefits are taxable but if you received an overpayment of unemployment benefits during the year, and you paid it back, you can deduct the amount of that overpayment on Schedule 1. Just make sure to take the deduction in the same year that you paid it back. While you can still deduct it in later years, the process is more of a hassle.

There are some tax deductions and credits you know you should claim on your income tax return every year. Its unlikely youll ever forget to deduct your RRSP contributions, for example, and claiming a tax credit for your charitable donations is a no-brainer. But other claims can be easy to overlook if theyre newor just new to you because you havent had the opportunity to use them before.
With that in mind, here are some of the deductions and credits that you should check to see if you are eligible to claim this yearalong with their potential tax savingsto make sure you dont end up leaving money on the table.
Doing Well By Doing Good
You donated your skinny jeans and wagon-wheel coffee table to Goodwill which, in turn, reduced your taxes by increasing your charitable deductions. The Internal Revenue Service requires that you provide a qualified appraisal of the item or group of items when you make a physical donation worth more than $5,000. For items such as electronics, appliances, and furniture, you may need to pay a professional to assess the value of your donation.
Individuals can elect to deduct donations of up to 100% of their 2020 AGI . Corporations may deduct up to 25% of taxable income, up from the previous limit of 10%. Additionally, section 2204 of the CARES Act permits eligible individuals who do not itemize deductions to deduct $300 of qualified charitable contributions as an “above-the-line” deduction, i.e., as an adjustment in determining AGI, for the 2020 tax year.
Capital gains property donations, such as appreciated stock, are limited to 30% of AGI, and you may no longer claim a deduction for contributions that entitle you to college athletic seating rights.
Taxpayers who do not itemize their deductions are also allowed up to a $300 deduction for charitable contributions, thanks to the CARES Act. The 60% AGI limitation is suspended for itemizing taxpayers who donate to charity in 2021.

Credit For Prior Year Minimum Tax
If you paid alternative minimum tax in a previous year but donât have to pay it this year, you may be able to claim a credit this year to get back some of the AMT you paid. This credit only applies to AMT you paid because of âdeferral itemsâ such as depreciation or incentive stock options that you exercised but didnât sell. This credit can also be claimed by individuals, estates, or trusts. Learn more in the instructions for Form 8801.
Business Expenses For Performing Artists
Low-income performing artists can deduct certain business expenses, such as costs necessary to complete a rehearsal. However, qualifying for this deduction is challenging. You must have an adjusted gross income of $16,000 or less your business expenses must have been at least 10% of your gross income you must have worked as a performing artist for multiple employers and each employer must have paid at least $200. If you think you qualify, look for the deduction on Form 2106 and Schedule 1.

Second Mortgage Tax Deductions
You may be able to deduct interest on a second mortgage, usually a home equity loan or home equity line of credit . But, since 2018, you can only do so if you used the money to buy, build, or substantially improve your main residence or second home. Older loans have no such rule.

To collect tax efficiently and quickly, the Income Tax department of the Government of India has introduced a system called TDS . Using TDS, tax can be deducted/collected at source of income. TDS is an indirect method of collecting tax by the government. Canada Pension Plan Contributions

What Are Tax Deductions
Tax deductions are expenses you can legally deduct from your taxable income, thereby lowering your taxable income and, consequently, your tax liability. These deductions are designed to encourage certain activities, including investing in a trade or contributing towards a retirement account.
The expenses usually occur within the tax year, and to write them off, you subtract them from your gross income. Doing so also allows you to figure out the exact amount of tax you owe.
