What Child Tax Credit Amount Will I Receive With My Tax Return
It depends. Another change to this years CTC was an increase in the credit amount from the usual $2,000 per child to $3,000 per child . However, not all parents will qualify for the entire additional credit value if their income is above the IRSs gradual phaseout thresholds.
Lets look at a couple of examples of how the same family would calculate their credit amount in two different income situations.
Debra is a single parent with three kids ages 4, 9 and 13. She has an adjusted gross income of $70,000 , meaning her children qualify for the full credit value available. Debra has been receiving advance monthly payments and is trying to calculate the credit amount she could receive when she files next year. Previously in 2020, she received a credit of $6,000 and she wants to know how different her credit will be this year.
Ready to do the math? Heres one way Debra could calculate her estimated credit amount:
$3,600 for 4-year-old + $3,000 for 9-year-old + $3,000 for 13-year-old = $9,600
Since Debra has already received half of her total CTC value as monthly payments, she needs to divide her total by 2 to calculate how much may be left over to claim when she files.
Debra has been collecting from the IRS each month based on her income.
$500 x 6 = $3,000

How Should You Request To Receive Your Refund
The IRS gives you three options for receiving your refund:
- direct deposit
- paper check
- deposit into US Savings Bonds
You can also apply a refund to any future taxes owed. This is a popular choice among some small business owners who are required to pay estimated taxes.
Of the three refund options available to you, direct deposit is the fastest and safest option. You can receive your refund via an ACH bank transaction in as little as a few days. Paper checks, however, can take over a week to process, several days to travel via the postal system, and several days to clear your bank.
*Note: Some tax software companies also offer the option of receiving a tax refund on a prepaid debit card. Im not particularly fond of this option, but it is available to some tax filers. In this case, the refund is first sent to the tax preparation company, then they issue you the prepaid debit card.

Are There Any Expected Tax Refund Delays
Yes, tax refund delays are common. The IRS is required by federal law to withhold tax refunds for taxpayers who claim Earned Income Tax Credits and Additional Child Tax Credit until at least Feb. 15, 2020. Keep in mind it can still take a week to receive your refund after the IRS releases it. So some people who file early may experience delays while awaiting their refund. Refunds should be processed normally after this date.
Note: The IRS anticipates a slower tax season for the 2020 tax year due to the backlog of tax returns that were delayed due to the pandemic. There may also be some complications for those who did not initially qualify for the the 2020 economic stimulus payment, but may qualify for the payment based on a change of income in 2020.
The IRS recommends filing your tax return electronically for faster processing and tax refund payments.
Also note that new identity theft protections and anti-fraud measures may hold up some refunds, as some federal tax returns may be held for further review.

How To Get A Faster Tax Refund
Here are four things that can help keep your “Where’s my refund” worries under control.
Avoid filing your tax return on paper. It’s a myth that your IRS refund status will be “pending” for a long time and that the IRS takes forever to issue a refund. In reality, you can avoid weeks of wondering “where’s my refund?” by avoiding paper. The IRS typically takes six to eight weeks to process paper returns. Instead, file electronically those returns are processed in about three weeks. State tax authorities also accept electronic tax returns, which means you may be able to get your state tax refund faster, too.
Get direct deposit. When you file your return, tell the IRS to deposit your refund directly into your bank account instead of sending a paper check. That cuts the time in waiting for the mail and having to check your IRS refund status. You even can have the IRS split your refund across your retirement, health savings, college savings or other accounts so that you dont fritter it away.
Don’t let things go too long. If you haven’t received your tax refund after at least 21 days of filing online or six weeks of mailing your paper return, go to a local IRS office or call the federal agency . But that wont fast-track your refund, according to the IRS. “Where’s my refund” will undoubtedly be a concern, but the thing to worry about here is refund theft. It isn’t corrected quickly, so you may be in for an even longer wait.
