Here’s What To Know About Filing For An Extension On Your Tax Returns
An IRS backlog from the pandemic means a possible delay in getting a refund.
For those who have either procrastinated or been unable to send in their tax returns by Monday’s deadline, the IRS says filing for an extension might be the best option.
Although this extension will give taxpayers until October 17, 2022 to complete their returns, they must pay taxes owed by the original due date or face penalties, according to the IRS.
Eric Smith, an agency spokesman, told ABC News if you believe you’ll owe the IRS, it’s better to overestimate your income to make sure you’re paying your full tax amount instead of paying for any interest on a potentially remaining balance.
While overestimating your income might have you pay more taxes initially, you’ll receive any refund when you complete your filing by the October extension deadline. Smith also recommended calling the IRS hotline at 800-829-1954 if you want to check on the status of your refund at any time.
For your state-specific tax questions you can visit the Federation of Tax Administrators to find your state’s specific tax extension procedures.
There’s a significant difference in the time it takes for Americans get their refunds based on the way they file — either electronically or by mail.
More Time To File Not More Time To Pay
Its important to remember that the Form 4868 extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. You will still have to pay your taxes by that year’s original due date, even if the IRS grants an extension to file later.
If you think you may owe taxes when it comes time to file your return, you should estimate how much you will owe and subtract any taxes that you have already paid . If your estimate is on the high side and you end up overpaying, you will get a refund when you eventually file your return. You’ll also avoid potential penalties and interest accumulating, which is what can happen if you underestimate your taxes due.
When you file Form 4868, youll need to pay the estimated income tax you owe. Sometimes it’s better to err on the high sideyoull get a refund anyway, while underestimates increase the risk of paying interest on the money owed.
You can pay some or all of your estimated income tax online using a debit or credit card, or through an electronic funds transfer using Direct Pay. It’s also possible to mail a check or money order to make your tax payment, even if you file electronically. Make the check or money order payable to the United States Treasury and include a completed Form 4868 as a voucher.
You do not need to file a paper Form 4868 if you submitted one electronically and are not mailing a payment.

Letter Should Be Sent Well In Advance
The letter should be sent well in advance of the time for which the request is made. A last minute request puts the receiver under pressure and in an awkward situation.
It also shows irresponsibility and poor planning on the part of the requester. This is not a courteous way to ask for a favor.
The requester should have a realistic idea of how much time they need for an extension. If they ask for too little time, there is a chance they will miss that deadline too and need to ask for another extension. This will, most likely, not be well received. It is also important to consider the time limits of the recipient.
Out Of Country Extension
If you are required to file a North Carolina individual income tax return and you are out of the country on the original due date of the return, you are granted an automatic four-month extension for filing your North Carolina individual income tax return if you fill in the “Out of Country” circle on Page 1 of Form D-400. “Out of Country” means you live outside the United States and Puerto Rico and your main place of work is outside the United States and Puerto Rico, or you are in military service outside the United States and Puerto Rico. The time for payment of the tax is also extended however, interest is due on any unpaid tax from the original due date until the tax is paid.
If you are unable to file your income tax return within the automatic four-month extension period, an additional two-month extension may be obtained by filling in the circle at the bottom right of Form D-410 or selecting “Y” at the “Out of country on due date prompt” on the Department’s personalized form creator. To receive the additional two-month extension, Form D-410 must be filed by August 15. Importantly, a taxpayer who is granted an automatic extension to file the corresponding State income tax return if they certify on the State return that the federal extension was granted. Consequently, an “Out of Country” taxpayer granted an automatic six-month extension to file the State income tax return will not be required to file Form D-410 to receive the additional two-month extension.

How To File An Extension For Your 2021 Tax Return
As a final thought, it’s important to mention how you can file for a tax extension. And there are two main options.
First, if you want to file your extension easily and quickly, you can file a tax extension through your favorite tax software provider, such as TurboTax or TaxAct. If you don’t have a preferred software provider, you can use the IRS Free File tool to find a provider and submit your extension.
Alternatively, you can print IRS Form 4868 and mail it to the IRS using the address in the form’s instructions. As mentioned earlier, you have to make sure your extension is postmarked by the deadline, but hopefully the extension will give you a little more time and peace of mind to get your taxes filed accurately.
State Tax Return Extensions
Your state may have different rules and due dates for extending state income tax returns. Some states have deadlines each year that come after the federal tax return filing due date. So, be sure to check with your state’s tax agency to see how tax return filing and payment extensions work where you live.
Filing For A Tax Extension: Form 4868
If you need an extension of time to file your individual income tax return, you must file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
The deadline to file for an extension is the same as the date your tax return is normally due. In most years, that’s April 15 or the next weekday if that date falls on a weekend.
Residents and business owners in Louisiana, Mississippi, and parts of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania received automatic extensions on their deadlines for 2020 return filings and 2021 estimated payments to the IRS until Feb. 15, 2022, because of Hurricane Ida. Taxpayers in parts of Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee received extensions after tornadoes in December 2021, as did residents of a Colorado county following wildfires later that month. Consult IRS disaster relief announcements to determine your eligibility.
Requesting an extension is free and relatively simple, and you can do it either electronically or on paper. Either way, you will need to provide identification information and your individual income tax information .
There are also checkboxes to indicate if you are either a U.S. citizen or resident who is out of the country or if you file Form 1040-NR, which is an income tax return that nonresident aliens may have to file if they engaged in business in the U.S. during the tax year or otherwise earned income from U.S. sources.

What Are The Penalties For Failing To File
If you aren’t going to get your tax return finished by April 18, it’s best to file for an extension because the failure-to-file penalty is stiff. It is based on the lateness of a tax return as well as the size of unpaid taxes from the due date.
The penalty rate is 5% of unpaid taxes for each month that a filing is late, capped at 25%. Take a taxpayer who owes $10,000 but doesn’t file for an extension if they file two months late, they would $500 each month for a total of $1,000 in penalties.
The 5% penalty is the most stringent fee the IRS levies against late filers, Rebecca Walser of Walser Wealth Management told CBS News.
What Is A Tax Extension
A tax extension gives you until Oct. 15 to file a tax return. A tax extension gives you an extension to file, but doesn’t give you an extension if you owe money to the IRS.
“Most people think that if they owe the IRS, this waives a few extra months for payment when that is not the case,” says Nakiea S. Cook, an accountant and the owner of NC Accounting & Consulting Solutions. “In fact, you can compute the amount you owe and send payment with your tax extension form.”
Note: You’re allowed an additional two months, usually until June 15, to file your tax return and pay any taxes due without requesting an extension if you’re a US citizen or resident alien and are living outside of the US and Puerto Rico and your main place of business is outside the US and Puerto Rico. If you need more than the additional two months, you can apply for another four month extension.
If you owe money, you’ll need to make a payment by the filing deadline which is April 18 for 2021 and April 19 for residents of Maine and Massachusetts in order to avoid penalties and interest. However, if you cannot pay the full balance due, it is still recommended that you file your tax return in order to avoid a failure to file penalty. You can apply for an installment agreement with the IRS online or by completing Form 9465. The failure to pay penalty is reduced when you have an approved payment plan with the IRS.

Dear Receivers Name,
I am enrolled in your English Literature 101 class and have been absent for the past five weeks because of injuries I sustained in an automobile accident.
You have kindly accommodated my situation by allowing me to turn in my homework late, and this has helped make it possible for me to remain enrolled in the university and not lose a semester, and I am very grateful to you.
I have been released from the hospital, but still need to walk with crutches for the next month. Because of this inconvenience, it will be very difficult to do the required research for the mid-term paper that is due on DATE.
I would like to ask for an extension of 10 days to complete the paper. It is my intention to submit the paper to you on DATE.
