When Do Taxes Need To Be Filed 2021

Don't Miss

What Is The Fastest Way To Get My Refund

What you need to know before filing 2021 taxes

The Department continuously makes changes and improvements to our refund processing. Our goal each year is to improve turnaround times for e-filed returns. You may improve your refund turnaround time by e-filing in February or later after you have received all W-2s and 1099s. Filing too early without the proper supporting documents may delay the processing of the return.

Turnaround times may also be improved by choosing direct deposit for your refund to an existing bank account and by using a tax professional or tax preparation software to reduce the chance of errors. On average, taxpayers who e-file receive their refunds almost two weeks faster than paper filers.

The Department offers tips to help you get your tax refund in a timely manner:

  • Consider using a tax preparer, or paid or free tax preparation software, to help you prepare your 2021 tax return.
  • Before you file, make sure you have all of your form W-2 and any form 1099 and include copies with your return if you paper file.
  • Use the correct, current year tax forms. Dont use prior year forms.
  • Provide your correct mailing address.
  • Provide correct banking information if you want direct deposit.
  • Double-check your entries into forms and math calculations .
  • Be sure all filers sign the return.

Taxpayers should be aware that the Department’s measures to combat personal income tax fraud during the 2022 tax filing season may cause delays in receiving their refunds.

Do Not Risk Having Your Benefits And Credits Interrupted

Doing taxes on time is the best way to ensure your entitlement to benefits and credits, like the Canada child benefit , the Old Age Security pension payments, and the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax credit, are not interrupted. Even if you owe tax, dont risk having your benefits and credits interrupted by not filing. If you cannot pay your balance owing, the CRA can work with you on a payment arrangement.

File Electronically And Choose Direct Deposit

To speed refunds, the IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit information as soon as they have everything they need to file an accurate return. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review that may slow the tax refund. Having all information available when preparing the 2021 tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing.

Most individual taxpayers file IRS Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR once they receive Forms W-2 and other earnings information from their employers, issuers like state agencies and payers. The IRS has incorporated recent changes to the tax laws into the forms and instructions and shared the updates with its partners who develop the software used by individuals and tax professionals to prepare and file their returns. Forms 1040 and 1040-SR and the associated instructions are available now on IRS.gov. For the latest IRS forms and instructions, visit the IRS website at IRS.gov/forms .

Don’t Miss: When Is My Tax Return Due

    This Year’s Tax Deadline

Taxes for 2021 are filed in 2022. The IRS began accepting returns for the prior tax year on Jan. 24, 2022, but the deadline for submitting returns is not until April 18. This is the last date when returns must be filed and unpaid taxes must be paid to the IRS to avoid possible penalties.

Normally, the tax deadline is actually a bit earlier, usually falling on April 15. However, if the 15th is either a weekend day or a holiday, then the tax deadline is pushed to the next business day. That’s what will happen this year.

As the IRS explained in its recent press release, Washington, D.C., holidays affect the tax deadline. Since Emancipation Day is a Washington holiday, and it falls on Friday, April 15, this means taxes must be pushed to the next business day. And in this case, that’s Monday, April 18.

Taxpayers in certain states, including Maine and Massachusetts, actually get until April 19 to file this year because of the Patriots’ Day holiday that is celebrated in those locations.
