Can I Still File My 2015 Taxes In 2021

Learn how to file your 2015 tax return for free!

Please remember that prior-year tax returns cannot be mailed in. From here on eFile, you can e-file your 2021 Tax Return until April 18, 2022, in any format. In the event that you owe taxes, you could also face charges if you wait until after the deadline to file your return or owe late fees if the return is e-filed after that time.

Filing Your Tax Return Is Not Only Time Consuming It Can Be Expensive

But you may be able to get your taxes done for free. Here’s how:

You make less than $60,000 a year: If your household income is $60,000 or less, you’re eligible for free tax preparation and free e-filing of your federal return. And in some cases you may be allowed to file your state tax return gratis, too.

For federal returns, the IRS has partnered with the Free File Alliance, a nonprofit coalition of 14 leading tax preparation software companies, including H& R Block, Jackson Hewitt, TurboTax, Liberty Tax and Tax Slayer.

To make sure you’re getting the brand-name online software for the Free File program, go through the IRS portal.

Some — like H& R Block and Liberty Tax — may even offer you help over the phone or in their offices if you have questions using their programs. Others like Jackson Hewitt will let you to submit a question and get a response within 24 hours.

Each Alliance member applies its own sub-criteria for who qualifies. For instance, some will accept all filers with AGIs of $60,000 or less, while others may only accept those making $53,500 or less. Some also set age requirements or only work with filers in certain states.

Be aware, too, that you may be charged a “convenience” fee if you end up owing federal taxes and use a credit card to make your payment.

There’s another way to get your taxes done for free if you make less than $60,000.

Reasonable Cause For Late Filing

As an alternative to submitting late returns under this delinquent filer program, you may instead request relief by attaching a statement to your delinquent return, signed by a person in authority, stating your reasonable cause for the untimely return. However, if the request is denied, you will receive a penalty notice and the return will no longer be eligible for this delinquent filer program.

Stop Late Filing And Payment Penalties And Interest

How to Track Your Medicare Claims

Filing a tax return on time is key to avoid penalties, even if you can’t pay the balance you owe. If you don’t pay your balance, you may have to pay an additional 5% of the unpaid tax you were required to report for each month your tax return is late, up to five months. Minimum penalty limits also apply.

The IRS assesses another penalty for a failure to pay your taxes owed. If you do file on time, but you can’t pay what you owe in full by the due date, you’ll be fined an additional 0.5% of the amount of the tax not paid on time for each month or part of a month you are late. These fees will accrue until your balance is paid in full or the penalty reaches 25%, whichever comes first.

The IRS also charges interest on overdue taxes. Unlike penalties, interest does not stop accruing after a particular period goes by.

Documents For Tax Credits And Deductions

Tax deductions and tax credits reduce the amount of income tax you owe for the year . You may need to gather additional tax documents to claim specific types of credits and deductions. For example, you probably need to have a copy of Form 1098-T if you want to deduct college tuition with the lifetime learning credit.

Even if credits and deductions were changed or eliminated for future years, you can claim them if they were available for the tax return youâre claiming. Learn more about the difference between tax credits and deductions as well as the difference between different types of deductions.

Common documents you may need include:

  • Receipts from charitable donations for the charitable contributions deduction

  • Receipts for unreimbursed employee expenses, such as for travel or union dues

  • Moving expenses if you moved for a job

  • Documents showing the value of any casualty and theft losses, not including losses already covered by your homeowners insurance policy

Your Options Beyond Freefile

If you dont meet the criteria for free tax-prep software through the IRS FreeFile site, try visiting a few commercial sites. As previously stated, going to a commercial site directly gets you to a different landing page, but for some filers this might not be a bad thing.

On TurboTaxs Absolute Zero site, for example, you can get free federal and state software and e-filingas long as you can file using a 1040EZ or 1040A form. In other words, your tax situation must be relatively simple: Your adjusted gross income cannot exceed $100,000 you cant itemize deductions and you cannot receive income from most sources other than salaries, simple interest and/or dividends, unemployment insurance, pensions, and Social Security.

If you run your own business, youre out of luck on any of these options. You must file a Schedule C for sole proprietorships, which is only available in a regular 1040.

TurboTaxs Absolute Zero service offers an easy-to-use interface, not unlike its popular paid service.

The fine print keeps going. While TaxAct, a popular tax-prep provider that traditionally caters to budget-sensitive filers, also offers free federal and state returns to those eligible for 1040EZ or 1040A filing, the free service on H& R Blocks regular website does not come with free state filing.

TaxAct has free e-filing options for both state and federal returns, whereas many commercial services only offer the latter.

The Tax Code Has Changed Significantly

Savvy Saver: IRS Free File

As we said earlier, tax law changes have gotten lost in the shuffle this year. But you should know about them since they may well affect you. Tax website developers have built all of these modifications into their online solutions.

For instance, standard deduction amounts are different for the 2020 tax year. Theyve actually been increased a bit. If youre a married couple, the standard deduction is now $24,800. In addition, each spouse 65 or older gets a $1,300 deduction. If youre single, you can claim a $12,400 standard deduction. You get an $18,650 deduction as head of household plus $1,650 at age 65 or older.

Income tax brackets themselves didnt change for 2020, but the brackets include a broader range of income due to inflation.

Long-term capital gains rates stayed the same for 2020, but their income thresholds increased. For example, you now qualify for the 20% rate if you earned more than $441,550 as a single filer. For couples filing jointly, the income threshold is $496,600, and heads of household, $469,050. Most taxpayers will fall into the 0% or 15% range. Some high-income taxpayers will be hit with an additional 3.8% net investment income surtax for both short- and long-term gains.

If you dont itemize deductions on a Schedule A, you can still deduct up to $300 in cash contributions to qualified organizations.

Some tax breaks that were slated to expire were extended late last year, including the mortgage insurance premium deduction and energy-saving credits.

How Late Can You File

The IRS prefers that you file all back tax returns for years you have not yet filed. That said, the IRS usually only requires you to file the last six years of tax returns to be considered in good standing. Even so, the IRS can go back more than six years in certain instances.

Unfortunately, there is a limit on how far back you can file a tax return to claim tax refunds and tax credits. This IRS only allows you to claim refunds and tax credits within three years of the tax return’s original due date. By not filing within three years of the due date, you might end up owing even more taxes because you can no longer claim the lucrative tax credits you might have otherwise qualified for.
