Check Status Of A Tax Refund In Minutes Using Wheres My Refund

IRS Tax Tip 2018-35, March 7, 2018

The Where’s My Refund? tool gives taxpayers access to their tax return and refund status anytime. All they need is internet access and three pieces of information:

  • Their Social Security number.
  • Their filing status.
  • The exact whole dollar amount of their refund.

Taxpayers can start checking on the status of their return within 24 hours after the IRS received their e-filed return, or four weeks after they mail a paper return. Wheres My Refund? includes a tracker that displays progress through three stages: the IRS receives the tax return, then approves the refund, and sends the refund.

Wheres My Refund? updates once every 24 hours, usually overnight. Taxpayers should remember that checking the status more often will not produce new results. Taxpayers on the go can track their return and refund status on their mobile devices using the free IRS2Go app. Those who file an amended return should check out the Wheres My Amended Return? tool.

Generally, the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, but some may take longer. IRS phone and walk-in representatives can research the status of refunds only if it’s been 21 days or more since a taxpayer filed electronically, or more than six weeks since they mailed a paper return. Taxpayers can also contact the IRS if Where’s My Refund? directs them to do so.

What Do Tax Topic 152 Tax Topic 151 And Irs Error Messages Mean

Although the IRS’ Where’s My Refund tool will generally show one of the three main statuses — Received, Approved or Sent — for your refund, there are a wide variety of messages and notices that some users may see.

One of the most common is Tax Topic 152, a generic message indicating that you’re likely getting a refund, but it hasn’t been approved or sent yet. The notice simply links out to an informational topic page on the IRS FAQ website explaining the types and timing of tax refunds.

During the 2022 tax season, many Reddit tax filers who filed early received the Tax Topic 152 notice from the Where’s My Refund tool accompanied by a worrisome message: “We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal time frame. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is very important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible.”

The purported delay could be an automated message designed for taxpayers claiming the child tax credit or earned income tax credit. Due to additional fraud protection steps, the earliest filers with those credits can receive their refunds will be March 1. Several Reddit users commented that the message eventually cleared and they received notifications their refunds were sent.

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

    Here

Here’s how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The TOP will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, TOP will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • TOP will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then TOP will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, TOP will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Here’s an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund. But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. TOP will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

The Internal Revenue Service can help you understand more about tax refund offsets.

Why Is My Refund Different Than The Amount On The Tax Return I Filed

All or part of your refund may have been used to pay off past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, or other federal nontax debts, such as student loans. To find out if you may have an offset or if you have questions about an offset, contact the agency to which you owe the debt.

We also may have changed your refund amount because we made changes to your tax return. This may include corrections to any incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit amount. Youll get a notice explaining the changes. Wheres My Refund? will reflect the reasons for the refund offset when it relates to a change in your tax return.

    When The Irs Gets Backlogged

Refunds also take longer to process when the IRS is receiving a higher-than-normal volume of tax returns, typically at the peak of filing season when everyone is trying to get their tax return in so they can get their hands on their refunds as quickly as possible. Other issues can complicate processing as well, such as if the IRS wants to verify information on your return. This verification process can further delay things when the IRS gets backlogged.

One More Thing To Know About Your Tax Refund

It’s actually something you kind of want to avoid. It may seem great to get a big check from the government, but all a tax refund tells you is that you’ve been overpaying your taxes all year and needlessly living on less of your paycheck the whole time.

For example, if you got a $3,000 tax refund, you’ve been giving up $250 a month all year. Could having an extra $250 every month have helped with the bills? If you want to get that money now rather than later, you can adjust your withholdings by giving your employer a new IRS Form W-4 .

Tracking Refunds From Amended Tax Returns

Refund information for an amended federal income tax return on Form 1040X isn’t available on “Where’s My Refund” portal. But there is a resource you can use to track the status of an amended return for the current tax year and up to three prior tax years. Not surprisingly, it’s called the “Where’s My Amended Return” portal.

To access the tool, you’ll need to provide your Social Security number, date of birth, and zip code. It can take up to 3 weeks after you mailed it for an amended return to show up in the portal. Why Is My Tax Refund Coming In The Mail Instead Of Deposited Into My Bank Account

How to Check Your Tax Refund Status

There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouse’s name or a joint account. If that’s not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS’ next best way to refund your money quickly.

It’s also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isn’t always automatic. Just in case, sign in to your IRS account to check that the agency has your correct banking information. If you are receiving a refund check in the mail, learn how to track it from the IRS to your mailbox.

The Where’s My Refund Online Tool

The IRS indicates that it issues nine out of 10 refunds within three weeks if you choose direct deposit and you’ve e-filed your tax return. Refunds can take six to eight weeks if you file a paper return.

Go to Where’s My Refund? on the IRS website to check the status of your refund. The tool is updated every 24 hours. You’ll need some information:

    • Your Social Security number or Employer Identification Number as it appears on your tax return
    • The filing status you claimed on your return: single, head of household, married filing jointly, married filing separately, or qualifying widow
    • The exact refund amount as shown on your tax return

You’ll be redirected to a Refund Status Results screen when you plug in this information. This screen should say one of three things:

    • Return received
    • Refund approved
    • Refund sent

The IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically and to request direct deposit as soon as they have the information they need. This will help speed up their refunds.

You should see an estimated date for deposit into your bank account if your refund has been approved. There should also be a separate date for when you should contact your bank if you haven’t received your refund by then.

    The Irs2go Mobile App

You can access the Where’s My Refund tool from your laptop or desktop computer, or you can use the IRS2Go app if you prefer to use your mobile device. The app is available as a free download on iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon. You can use it to:

    • Check your refund status
