How Income Tax Works
Federal and Ontario income taxes are paid to the Canada Revenue Agency , which is part of the federal government.
Income tax is commonly taken off your pay by your employer, or off your pension, and sent directly to the CRA. You may also have to calculate the tax you owe and send a payment to the CRA.
Each year, you should file a tax return with the CRA to:
- report the income youve made
- ensure youve paid the correct amount of income tax
- access tax credits and benefits
Learn more about how much tax you should pay on each portion of your income.
How To File Electronically
You might want to e-file your late return if you haven’t missed that deadline as well. Many taxpayers can e-file at IRS Free File if their AGIs were under $72,000 in 2021. Some other rules can apply as well, imposed by the individual software providers that participate in the Free File Alliance.
The IRS will accept e-filed returns until November. It will announce the exact November cutoff date sometime in October 2022.
Why Might A Tax Extension Request Be Rejected
Nine times out of ten, if you file on time and fill out the form correctly, you should have no issue getting an extension.
In most cases, applications are rejected for minor discrepancies that can easily be rectified. If it comes down to a misspelling or providing information that doesn’t corroborate with IRS records, the tax authority will usually give you a few days to sort out those errors and get the form filed againthis time accurately.
The IRS tends to take less kindly to unrealistic tax liability estimates. If it disagrees with your figures, your application for an extension may be denied and you could even be hit with a penalty.

Whats The Deadline To Pay Your Taxes
If youâre sending your return in via snail mail, the IRS considers your return âon timeâ if itâs addressed correctly, has enough postage, and is in the mail before the end of business on your filing deadline.
Otherwise, you can e-file your return before midnight on your tax filing deadline day.
If youâre self-employed, your business probably pays taxes in four sums throughout the year, rather than on one day. These are called estimated tax payments. The due date for these 2022 payments are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 16 .

What If I Owe More Than I Can Pay
This year, many people are dealing with financial troubles due to the pandemic, job loss and other factors. If you’re one of them, you may not have the funds available to pay your tax bill by the deadline. But don’t put off filing just because you can’t afford to pay the amount due on the day you need to file your tax return. The IRS starts charging penalties and interest on the day the return is due, no matter when you file. You can minimize the failure-to-file penalties by filing as soon as possible, paying as much as you can when you file and setting up an installment plan for the balance.

Need more time to prepare your federal tax return? This page provides information on how to apply for an extension of time to file. Please be aware that:

- You should estimate and pay any owed taxes by your regular deadline to help avoid possible penalties.
- You must file your extension request no later than the regular due date of your return.

What If I Made A Mistake And Need To Refile My Taxes
It happens. You file your tax return, then realize you forgot to report some income or claim a certain tax credit. You don’t need to redo your whole return. Simply file an amendment using Form 1040X.
IRS Form 1040X is a two-page form used to amend a previously filed tax return. TurboTax can walk you through the amendment process and, beginning with the 2019 tax year, even e-file your amended tax return for you.
What Happens If I Miss The Tax Deadline
If you received an extension and fail to file your income taxes by midnight on Oct. 15, what happens next depends on your situation. If you are owed a refund, there is no penalty for filing late, though this may be different for your state taxes. But if you owe the IRS, penalties and interest start to accrue on any remaining unpaid tax due. There’s also a $330 failure-to-file penalty under the Taxpayer First Act of 2019.
In most states, taxpayers who are granted a federal extension to file automatically receive an equivalent extension to file their state income tax return.
An important note: If you are owed a refund or you filed for an extension through Oct. 15, you were supposed to pay your taxes by May 17. If you owe money, you would have been required to estimate the amount due and pay it with your Form 4868. If you did that, you should have automatically been granted an extension.
Another caveat: If you’re serving in the military — in a combat zone or a contingency operation in support of the armed forces — you may be granted additional time to file, according to the IRS.
Bottom line? It’s best to e-file or postmark your individual tax return as early as possible. CNET’s roundup of the best tax software for 2021 features an array of packages that can help you take care of business quickly and affordably.

When Will I Get My Tax Refund
How quickly you can expect to see your refund depends on how you file, when you file and which payment method you choose. Filing online and filing earlier usually results in faster processing. In a normal year, the typical turnaround ranges from one to three weeks, but given the extreme abnormality of the past year, all bets are off.
To speed up refunds during the pandemic, the IRS is asking taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit as soon as possible, so the IRS can deposit your refund right into your bank account. Tax software companies, including IRS Free File partners, began transmitting those returns to the IRS back on Feb. 12.
If you choose an e-Collect direct deposit, where your tax preparer’s fee is deducted from your refund, it may add a few more days to your wait. A paper check may take several weeks to arrive.
Here’s how to estimate your tax refund.
File For An Extension By Tax Day
If you can’t finish your return by the April 18 tax deadline, file IRS Form 4868. This will buy most taxpayers until Oct. 17 to file their tax returns. See more about how extensions work.Note: A tax extension gets you more time to file your return, not more time to pay your taxes. You still must pay any tax you owe, or a good estimate of that amount, by the tax deadline. Include that payment with your extension request or you could face a late-payment penalty on the taxes due.

Federal Income Tax Deadline For 2021 Tax Returns
The filing deadline for the 2021 tax year is April 18, which falls on a Monday. If you need even more time to complete your 2021 federal return you can request a six-month extension by filing Form 4868 through your tax professional, tax software or using the Free File link on IRS.gov. Filing Form 4868 gives taxpayers six extra months to file their 2021 tax return but does not grant an extension of time to pay taxes due. You may owe a late payment penalty on any tax not paid by the original due date of your return.
If you mail in your return, it must be postmarked April 18, 2022, or sooner. The IRS typically issues refunds within 21 days after a tax return is filed.
People who still want to contribute to an individual retirement account for the 2021 tax year still need to make contributions by April 15, 2022. It is also necessary to include contributions made to traditional IRAs on your tax return. If you contributed to a Roth IRA during 2021, you wont need to report those contributions on your tax return.
Filing For A Tax Extension: Form 4868
If you need an extension of time to file your individual income tax return, you must file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
The deadline is the same as the date your tax return is normally due. In most years, that’s April 15 or the next weekday.
Residents and business owners in Louisiana and parts of Mississippi, New York, and New Jersey were automatically granted extensions on their deadlines for filings and payments to the IRS due to Hurricane Ida. Due to the tornado in December 2021, taxpayers in parts of Kentucky were also granted extensions. You can consult IRS disaster relief announcements to determine your eligibility.
Requesting an extension is free and relatively simple, and it can be done either electronically or on paper. Either way, you will need to provide identification information and your individual income tax information .
There are also checkboxes to indicate if you are either a U.S. citizen or resident who is out of the country or if you file Form 1040-NR, which is an income tax return that nonresident aliens may have to file if they engaged in business in the U.S. during the tax year or otherwise earned income from U.S. sources.
Like all other tax forms, Form 4868 is available on the IRS website. Visit the “Forms, Instructions & Publications” section for a list of frequently downloaded forms and publications, including Form 4868.

Will The Tax Deadline Be Extended Again
That remains to be seen. The IRS had no plans to extend the tax-filing deadline for the 2020 tax year, but it later changed course and pushed the standard April 15 deadline to May 17, 2021. The agency also delayed Tax Day the year prior in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the state of the pandemic remains in flux, the IRS has so far given no indication that it will postpone the tax-filing deadline for the third year in a row. In addition, given the rules changes going into effect in 2022 as well as potentially complicating factors, like this years expanded child tax credit payments and repayment of deferred Social Security taxes, taxpayers have even more incentive to get a head start on their 2021 returns.
