How to File a No Tax Due Information Report

As a small business owner, you may be required to file additional returns, such as those for payroll and GST/HST remittances and withholdings. Failure to meet the CRAs payroll obligations results in penalties and interest there are several types of penalties for payroll accounts. Failure to deduct can result in a penalty of 10% for the first failure, and will go up to 20% with any additional failures. Late filing or non-payment penalties start at 3% and will go up to 20%.

What Happens If You Miss The Tax Filing Deadline And Are Owed A Refund

If you overpaid for the 2021 tax year, there’s typically no penalty for filing your tax return late. However, you should file as soon as possible.

Generally, you have three years from the tax return due date to claim a tax refund. That means for 2021 tax returns, the window closes in 2025. After three years, unclaimed tax refunds typically become the property of the U.S. Treasury.

Tax Deadline Extension: What Is Extended For 2021

The IRS gave residents and businesses of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana extra time because a severe mid-February winter storm left millions without power and water.

On March 17, 2021, the IRS officially extended the federal income tax filing deadline from April 15 to May 17. That means taxpayers who owe money dont need to file a tax return until this date, and if they owe money they dont need to make payments until then.

This extension applies to all filers, including individuals, businesses, trusts, estates and more. It applies regardless of the amount you might owe, and payments will not incur additional penalties or interest up until May 17. This extension is automatic, meaning taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms to take advantage of it.

The May 17 extension could provide some significant benefits for taxpayers looking to save for retirement through an IRA. Thats because the normal April 15 income tax deadline is also the IRA contribution deadline. In turn, the new May 17 due date would simultaneously push back the 2019 IRA contribution deadline.

For reference, the 2020 standard IRA contribution limit is still $6,000, or $7,000 if you are 50 or older. If youve already maxed out your contribution for the 2020 tax year, you can contribute toward the 2021 tax year, for which the limit is also $6,000.

This extension does not apply to 401 retirement savings accounts.

Minimize Penalties And Interest

The IRS can penalize you if you dont file a return or pay any tax you owe by the deadline. Generally, the penalty for not filing is more than the penalty for not paying. You may also be charged interest on any unpaid tax balance.

Filing your back taxes and paying anything you owe may help limit the amount of interest and penalties youre subject to for missing the deadline.

Changes In Income Or Exemptions

If your expected Virginia adjusted gross income changes during the year, re-compute your estimated tax to determine how much your remaining payments should increase or decrease.

A change in income, deductions or exemptions may require you to file an estimated payment later in the year. If you file your state income tax return and pay the balance of tax due in full by March 1, you are not required to make the estimated tax payment that would normally be due on Jan. 15.

If you file your return after March 1 without making the January payment, or if you have not paid the proper amount of estimated tax on any earlier due date, you may be liable for an additional charge for underpayment of estimated tax.

IRS Extends Tax Deadline to July 2020

The deadline for filing your 2021 taxes is April 18, 2022. Typically, April 15 is designated by the U.S. government as the day taxes are due every year. April 16 is Emancipation Day in Washington, and since it falls on a Saturday this year, the holiday will be officially observed on the closest weekday, April 15.

With few exceptions, Tax Day in the United States has fallen on the same date since 1955: April 15. And while the IRS extended the filing and payment deadlines for the 2019 and 2020 tax years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, dont expect any extra time to pay and submit your 2021 return.

The IRS began accepting and processing 2021 tax returns toward the end of January.

Given the rule changes going into effect in 2022 as well as potentially complicating factors, like this years expanded child tax credit payments and repayment of deferred Social Security taxes, taxpayers have even more incentive to get moving on their 2021 returns.

If you request a tax extension by April 18, you can have until October 17 to file your taxes.

    • However, getting a tax extension only gives you more time to file the paperwork it does not give you more time to pay.

If you request a tax extension by April 18, you can have until October 17 to file your taxes.

Whats The Deadline To Pay Your Taxes

Even if you successfully apply for an extension, the payment deadlines donât change. The penalty for late payment is 0.5% of the taxes owed each month compared to 5% for late filing. Regardless of whether you can pay your small business taxes, it always pays off to file on time.

If youâre sending your return via snail mail, the IRS considers your return âon timeâ if itâs addressed correctly, has enough postage, and is in the mail before the end of business on your filing deadline. Otherwise, you can e-file your return before midnight on your tax filing deadline day.

If youâre self-employed, your business probably pays taxes in four sums throughout the year, rather than on one day. These are called estimated tax payments and you can think of them as a prepayment of your income and self-employment taxes . The due dates for these 2022 payments are April 18, June 15, September 15, and January 16 .

Understand How Your Taxes Are Determined

The government decides how much tax you owe by dividing your taxable income into chunks also known as tax brackets and each chunk gets taxed at the corresponding tax rate. The beauty of this is that no matter which bracket youre in, you wont pay that tax rate on your entire income.

The progressive tax system in the United States means that people with higher taxable incomes are subject to higher federal income tax rates, and people with lower taxable incomes are subject to lower federal income tax rates.
