This is an updated version of an earlier article.
The federal tax filing season has begun. And it’s going to be tough sledding for the IRS — and for some tax filers — given the millions of returns from last year that still have to be processed, staffing issues due to Covid-19 and a lack of needed funding for the agency.
Third Coronavirus Stimulus Check
Millions of Americans in 2021 were eligible for a third stimulus check worth up to $1,400 per every qualifying individual in their household. If you havent yet received it or are missing the full amount for which youre eligible, youll be able to by claiming the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.
Start by calculating how much youre entitled to receive based on your households income and number of dependents. Single filers were eligible for the full $1,400 credit so long as their AGI didnt surpass $75,000, while married filers couldnt make more than $150,000 and heads of households had to earn less than $112,500. Dependents were also eligible for a $1,400 payment. Then, keep an eye out for Letter 6475 from the IRS, which should detail how much youve already received.
Perhaps the IRS didnt know you adopted a child or had a baby in 2021 maybe your income situation declined. All those circumstances could combine to make you eligible for additional stimulus money.
Unlike child tax credit payments, the IRS doesnt expect taxpayers to repay any overpaid money. The IRS, however, will not automatically calculate the 2021 recovery rebate credit for you, meaning its up to you to make sure you dont leave any money behind.
Experts say Americans can amend a submitted tax return if they realize that they forgot to claim a missing stimulus payment after the fact though that could lead to longer wait times.

What Happens If You File Personal Taxes Late
Filing your taxes late when you have earned a refund or dont owe any further tax will not result in any fees or penalties. However, if you owe money and file late, the CRA charges you a penalty on the taxes owed equal to five percent plus an additional percent for each month late up to 12 months. Taxes owed to the CRA are due the day your tax return is due for individuals. If you cannot pay the full amount, the CRA will accept late payments but charges compound daily interest on all amounts due.
For example, if you owe the CRA $10,000 and you file your tax return 5 months late, the CRA will apply a 10 percent penalty and your tax bill is increased to $11,000.
Understand How Your Taxes Are Determined
The government decides how much tax you owe by dividing your taxable income into chunks also known as tax brackets and each chunk gets taxed at the corresponding tax rate. The beauty of this is that no matter which bracket youre in, you wont pay that tax rate on your entire income.
The progressive tax system in the United States means that people with higher taxable incomes are subject to higher federal income tax rates, and people with lower taxable incomes are subject to lower federal income tax rates.

Tax Filing Season Begins Feb 12 Irs Outlines Steps To Speed Refunds During Pandemic
IR-2021-16, January 15, 2021
WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation’s tax season will start on Friday, February 12, 2021, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2020 tax year returns.
The February 12 start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to do additional programming and testing of IRS systems following the December 27 tax law changes that provided a second round of Economic Impact Payments and other benefits.
This programming work is critical to ensuring IRS systems run smoothly. If filing season were opened without the correct programming in place, then there could be a delay in issuing refunds to taxpayers. These changes ensure that eligible people will receive any remaining stimulus money as a Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2020 tax return.
To speed refunds during the pandemic, the IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit as soon as they have the information they need. People can begin filing their tax returns immediately with tax software companies, including IRS Free File partners. These groups are starting to accept tax returns now, and the returns will be transmitted to the IRS starting February 12.
Last year’s average tax refund was more than $2,500. More than 150 million tax returns are expected to be filed this year, with the vast majority before the Thursday, April 15 deadline.
Advance Child Tax Credit
Beginning with your tax year 2021 taxes , the age limit and the amount of the Child Tax Credit increased and is now fully refundable meaning youll be eligible for the benefits even if you dont owe taxes.
Eligible families may have received advance CTC payments of up to $300 per month for each child under age 6 and up to $250 per month for each child age 6 and above from July 2021 to December 2021. These payments were sent in advance and represent a portion of the tax year 2021 Child Tax Credit.
New this year, families who received advance CTC payments should receive Letter 6419 with the total amount of advance CTC payments received from July 2021 to December 2021. If you filed as married filing jointly on your prior year tax return, then both you and your spouse will receive a Letter 6419.
For couples married filing jointly, you need both letters when filing your tax return as both amounts will need to be added on your tax return. Make sure you have IRS letter 6419 in front of you when you file, so you can accurately report the amount of Advanced Child Tax Credit payments you received and get the rest of your 2021 Child Tax Credit you are eligible for.

Third Stimulus Check And The Recovery Rebate Credit
This year on your tax return, you may receive a credit known as the Recovery Rebate Credit. Its possible to get this credit if your adjusted gross income on your 2021 tax return is smaller than the one that was used to calculate your third stimulus check, if you have more dependents, or if you didnt receive all of what you were eligible for.
You should take care to NOT mix information from your 2020* and 2021 tax years. Do not include information regarding the first and second stimulus payments received in 2020, or the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, on your 2021 tax return.
New this year, the IRS is sending Letter 6475 now through March 2022 with the total amount of your stimulus payment issued by the IRS in 2021. This letter has all the info you need to report the correct amount of third stimulus you received. Hold on to this letter because you will need it when filing your tax return. If you are married filing jointly, you and your spouse will need both letters when completing your tax return.
You may have also received Notice 1444-C from the IRS during 2021 after each payment, but you should use the information on IRS letter 6475. Review this information on your IRS online account to report the correct amount received and claim the recovery rebate credit you are eligible for.
To claim any remaining credit for 2021, eligible people must file a 2021 tax return, even if they usually do not file taxes.
