What To Do If You Made More Than $72000
If your gross annual income was more than $72,000 in 2020, there is another free program that you can access through the IRS, but it requires you to prepare your taxes yourself.
The Free Fillable Forms program offers online tax forms that people can use to input their information and then either electronically file with the IRS or print out and mail to the agency.
Unlike other programs, Free Fillable Forms doesn’t give you any guidance or step-by-step instruction it only does basic calculations of the numbers you put into the forms. It’s also only available for federal taxes though people in certain states can access local programs to file their state returns.
Still, if you have the time and are comfortable preparing your own taxes, the Free Fillable Forms program is a good option. You won’t be able to do much preparation in advance, however the program opens on Feb. 12.
Types Of Taxable Income
You have to report any taxable income you earn inside and outside Canada when you file your tax return. This includes:
- any full-time or part-time work
- self-generated income
- rental income, including renting out a portion of your home
- your pension
You do not have to report certain non-taxable amounts as income, including:
- elementary, secondary and post-secondary school scholarships

Incomes Above $6900: Free Fillable Forms
The IRS also offers Free Fillable Forms, which everyone can use without any income limit. These are basically just electronic copies of the IRSs normal paper tax forms. Theyll do some math for you, but thats it. Dont expect the user-friendly interview process found in commercial tax software applications.
These fillable forms might sound intimidating, but theyre still easier than paper forms. When youre done with the forms, you can e-file right from the forms website without printing and mailing anything.
The IRS only offers federal tax forms, so youre on your own when it comes to your state taxes. Your state may provide free fillable forms on its website if it requires that you file a state tax return, but thats up to your state tax agency.
Certain fillable forms have some limitations, so you may have to file a paper return to do some more complicated things. Be sure to consult the list of available forms and limitations on the IRSs website before beginning.
The IRSs Free Fillable Forms will be most convenient for people who have simple tax situations. If you just need to file a basic return, they should be pretty straightforward. If youre familiar with the tax forms, these Free Fillable Forms should also be faster than filling them out by hand. You wont have to mail anything, either.

Why Is Turbotax Charging Me
If you make less than $39,000 a year and TurboTax is telling you it costs money to file, you are probably using the wrong version of TurboTax. Dont worry, there is a way to access the truly free version.
As ProPublica reported in 2019, TurboTax purposely hid its Free File product and directed taxpayers to a version where many had to pay, called the TurboTax Free Edition. If you clicked on this FREE Guaranteed option, you could input a lot of your information, only to be told toward the end of the process that you need to pay.
You can still accessTurboTaxs Free File version. This version is offered through the Free File agreement.
TurboTaxs misleadingadvertisingandwebsite designdirected users to more expensive versions of the software, even if they qualified to file for free. After our stories published, some people demanded and got refunds. Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, faces several investigations and lawsuits over this practice. The company has denied wrongdoing, and has moved to acquire other free tax-preparation companies like Credit Karma.
Following ProPublicas reporting, the IRS announced an update to its agreement with the tax-preparation companies. Among other things, the update bars the companies from hiding their Free File offerings from Google search results. It also makes it so each company has to name their Free File service the same way, using the format: IRS Free File Program delivered by .

How To File Your Taxes For Free Online
Taxes may be one of life’s certainties. But paying to pay them isn’t.
In many other countries, the government does the math for you and tells you how much to pay, at no cost to you . In America, the Internal Revenue Service asks you to guess how much to pay, then punishes you if you are wrong. You also have the option to pay third-party companies for software that helps you make a better guess at the number that the IRS could calculate on its own.
The United States’ onerous tax code is thanks in no small part to companies that profit when you use their software or services to file. In 2019, ProPublica chronicled TurboTax maker Intuit’s long effort to separate taxpayers from a bit more of their money. H& R Block has also spent millions of dollars on lobbying to maintain the status quo.
At the turn of the millennium, Intuit and similar companies were staring down an existential threat: the possibility that the government would create a tax-filing system that most Americans could use for free.
Instead of letting that happen, a compromise was reached. The Free File Alliance, a coalition of tax-filing software companies that would each offer a free version in partnership with the IRS, was born. Members of the Free File Alliance are required to offer a tax filing solution that could serve 60% of taxpayers, but can limit that by factors such as income, state and age.
Intuit made its version of Free File .
The due date is May 17, 2021. Happy filing!

A Note About Audit Protection Plans
Filing for free usually means not having something called audit protection, which usually comes with the pricier tax-prep packages.
Audit protection works like insurance against the possibility of a CRA audit, according to Toronto tax lawyer David Rotfleisch.
Most taxpayers will never need it. However, if the CRA does come knocking on your door, audit protection will take care of responding to CRA inquiries and audit requests at a much lower cost than hiring an accountant or tax lawyer.
The unknown is the level of expertise of the people providing the representation services, Rotfleisch said. In a complex audit situation, he added, if the representatives do not have the proper expertise, the taxpayers situation may very well be prejudiced.
