The definition was narrower than for dependents who’d be eligible for certain credits under tax law, including children 17 and older, dependents of any age with disabilities and older adult relatives.

Under the new law, the $1,400 payments go out to a more widely defined group of dependents.

In response to the novel coronavirus, lawmakers authorized two direct payments to Americans. The first, provided by the CARES Act, was worth up to $1,200 per eligible adult and $500 for each eligible child dependent. The second, authorized by a $900 billion relief bill signed into law in December, was worth up to $600 per eligible adult and dependent child. Most Americans have now received the money for both of those payments.

When the money was appropriated, Congress authorized the IRS to distribute the payments. As a result, you may be wondering whether you need to file taxes to get a stimulus check. The answer to this question is a bit more complicated than it may seem.

If you weren’t required to file a 2019 tax return because you were below income limits or you receive federal benefits such as Social Security , you may still qualify for a payment. Up to 9 million people who fell into this nonfilers category were owed a first stimulus payment as of last fall.

Though many people in this category should have received their second payment automatically, if the IRS doesn’t send your money by the start of tax-filing season, you’ll need to file a federal tax return this year to claim your missing payment as a Recovery Rebate Credit, the Tax Foundation said.

TAX season is in the rearview mirror, but many Americans took an extension that will allow them to file a 2021 tax return by October 17.

And many are wondering if stimulus checks received last year are subject to being taxed.

In 2021, millions of Americans received a stimulus check worth up to $1,400.

That was the third round of stimulus issued amidst the ongoing Covid pandemic.

The payment was in addition to the child tax credit payments that began in July 2021, offering up to $300 per month per child to qualified parents.

Some individual states also issued aid to residents and more states rolled out relief refund programs this year to help compensate for surging inflation.

Do You Need To File This Year

First things first, lets figure out if you even need to file. This will depend on your income, age and filing status. For instance, if youre not married, younger than 65 and your gross income was less than $12,400, you dont need to file this year. On the other hand, if that income was from self-employment, this would be considered a special situation, and youd be required to file your tax return.

Not sure if you need to file? The IRS has a convenient tool to help you determine that. Just answer a few simple questions.

How Do I Know If I’m Eligible For More Stimulus Money

All stimulus check payments ended on December 31, 2021. Most Americans received their full payments, but there are a few reasons why you may not have received as much as you are eligible for: If you had a baby or added qualifying children to your family in 2021, you’re due another $1,400 for each additional kid.

Likewise, if your income dropped considerably last year, you could also be owed more money.

If you believe that you are eligible for more stimulus money than you received in 2021, the best tax software will calculate your recovery rebate credit automatically and include the amount of additional money on line 30 of your IRS Form 1040.

If you want to calculate your potential recovery rebate credit yourself, use the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet as directed in the IRS instructions for Form 1040.

Eligible To Receive A Stimulus Check

In the US, the Federal Government had passed the CARES Act to bring some relief to the Americans who are struggling due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Under the CARES Act, the IRS announced that a Stimulus check would be issued to the individuals in the US for financial relief up to some extent.

According to the IRS, most of the Americans would be receiving their Stimulus checks automatically based upon the 2019 tax returns. The information of the 2018 tax returns would be considered if the 2019 tax returns have not been filed by an individual. The Stimulus payments would be done by the Direct Deposit method as it would help in sending the money faster.

If Your Income Has Sharply Fallen In 2020

Where Do I Go Online To Apply For Stimulus Check

The new stimulus bill contains stricter income limits for eligibility. Americans will receive the full amount of the stimulus payment with an income up to $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for married joint filers.

But while the past two checks phased out at a rate of $5 per $100 earned above these thresholds , eligibility for this third payment disappears entirely for single filers with $80,000 or more in income or married filers with $160,000.

If your income was above the income limits for 2019, but fell sharply in 2020 — as it did for many people due to the pandemic — you may want to file a tax return ASAP to make sure the IRS has the most recent record when calculating your payment.

How Much Money Will I Get

  • Adults whose adjusted gross income is less than $75,000/year will get $1,400 for each adult, plus $1,400 for each dependent no matter how old they are. This applies to heads of households who make less than $112,500, as well.
  • The IRS will use income information from your 2020 tax return if they received that return before sending your money. Otherwise they will use information from your 2019 tax return.
  • If the IRS sends your payment based on a 2019 return and then your 2020 return says you qualify for more , they will send an additional payment to make up for the difference. To get the additional payment, you must file the 2020 tax return by 90 days from the filing deadline or September 1, 2021, whichever is earlier.

Simplified Tax Returns For Most Non

The IRS hopes most non-filers will go online and use the “Enter Your Payment Info Here” tool, but it also announced alternative procedures for filing “simplified” tax returns. If you file one of these simple returns by October 15, 2020, you will receive a stimulus check before the end of the year.

The first type of simplified return is for anyone who isn’t required to file a 2019 return, but who wants to file just to get a stimulus payment . This type of return can be filed electronically or by mailing in a paper return. However, the IRS spelled out very precise instructions on how the return should look. In addition to including your name, address, Social Security number, filing status, dependency status, and other basic information required on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, you must:

  • Write “EIP2020” on the form

  • Leave Column 4 in the dependent information section blank

  • Enter $1 on Lines 2b , 7b , and 8b

  • Enter the applicable standard deduction amount for your filing status on Line 9 if you’re filing electronically

  • Enter $0 on Line 11b

  • Leave the box on Line 21a unchecked, because stimulus payments can’t be divided among multiple accounts

  • Leave all other lines blank, even if the values for these lines are in fact not zero and

  • Provide your identity protection personal identification number , if applicable, and sign the return under penalties of perjury.

Recovery Rebate Tax Credit

IRS clarifies that not everyone needs to file their taxes to get stimulus check

When you file your 2021 federal income tax return this year, you’re going to see a line on the second page for the “Recovery rebate credit.” Pay close attention to that line, especially if you didn’t receive a full third-round stimulus check, you didn’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, your income dropped in 2021, you had a baby in 2021, you got married last year, you’re a recent college graduate, or you otherwise had a significant change of circumstances in 2021. If you’re eligible for a third stimulus check, this credit could save you a lot of money.

Your third stimulus check and the credit amount are calculated in the same way. However, your stimulus check was based on information from either your 2019 or 2020 tax return. The tax credit is based on what you put down on your 2021 tax return. So, the failure to file a 2019 or 2020 return, or a change of circumstances from 2020 to 2021, could result in a difference between the amount of your third stimulus check and the credit amount.

If the recovery rebate credit is higher than your third stimulus check, your 2021 tax bill will be lower, and you might even get a refund. If your stimulus check was higher than the allowed credit, you get to keep the difference. So, you win either way!
