  • If your net earnings were $400 or less for the quarter, you don’t have to pay estimated taxes — but you still have to file a tax return even if no taxes are due.
  • If you were a US citizen or resident alien for all of last year, your total tax was zero and you didn’t have to file an income tax return.
  • If your income fluctuates drastically throughout the year , you may be able to lower or eliminate your estimated tax payments with an annualized income installment method. Refer to the IRS’s 2-7 worksheet to see if you qualify.

Deadline For Texans To File Income Taxes Is Tuesday June 15

TEXAS â Texans, if youâve been putting it off, know that the window for filing your 2020 federal income taxes is almost closed.

In fact, the deadline to submit to the IRS is Tuesday, June 15.

You may recall that back in February the tax-filing deadline was extended for Texans in the wake of the devastating winter storm that caused millions of people to lose power. Homes and properties were damaged across the state.

Typically, the deadline is April 15 but the IRS wanted Texans to have more time to assess damage prior to filing.

âThe June 15 deadline also applies to quarterly estimated income tax payments due on April 15 and the quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on April 30. It also applies to tax-exempt organizations, operating on a calendar-year basis, that have a 2020 return due on May 17,â the IRS said in a statement.

The IRS further said that if you live in an area of Texas that was declared a disaster, you will automatically be provided with penalty and filing relief. If you donât live in a disaster area and need financial relief, youâre asked to call the IRS at 866-562-5227.

Most Americans had to file their federal tax return for the 2021 tax year by April 18, 2022. Note that we said “most Americans.” Taxpayers in two states had until April 19 to submit their 1040s to the IRS. Victims of certain natural disaster also get more time to file, with varying dates depending on when the disaster hit.

If for some reason you weren’t able to file your federal tax return on time, hopefully you requested an automatic six-month tax extension to October 17, 2022, by filing Form 4868 or making an electronic tax payment. To get the extension, you had to act by the original due date for your return, whether that was April 18, April 19, or some other date. Keep in mind, however, that an extension to file doesn’t extend the time to pay your tax. If you didn’t pay up by your original due date, you’ll owe interest on the unpaid tax and could be hit with additional penalties for filing and paying late.

Also note that special tax extension rules apply for Americans living abroad and people serving in a combat zone or contingency operation. As a result, they might have more time beyond April 18 to file their 2021 tax return and pay whatever tax they are expected to owe, and they could receive an extension past October 17.

Tax Day rhetoric aside, Americans

If you have yet to file your 2017 tax return and expect to receive a tax refund, youve been gifted a little more time. Typically, you must file a tax return with the IRS within three years of its original due date to obtain a tax refund.

However, the IRS recently announced extending the 2017 tax deadline to May 17, 2021, to give taxpayers more time to request a missing refund. If you need to file your 2017 tax return and dont have all the necessary forms, you can request them by creating an online account with the IRS. An online account will allow you to retrieve prior tax forms, such as your Form W-2, from a previous employer.

If you do not have access to a computer, you can also request your transcripts two additional ways. You can do so by mailing Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return to the IRS, or call 800-908-9946.
