On Your Side: What To Know About Mondays Deadline To File Taxes Plus How To Request An Extension
– Americans have had some extra time to prepare their taxes. The Internal Revenue Service delayed the traditional tax filing deadline from April 15 until May 17.
The IRS offered a reminder Friday with a link for those who need to request an extension to file their taxes.
The deadlines for individuals to file and pay most federal income taxes were extended to May 17, 2021. Click here to get more information: www.irs.gov/filing
Individual taxpayers who need additional time to file beyond the May 17 deadline can request a filing extension until Oct. 15. They will need to file Form 4868 through their tax professional, tax software or using the IRS Free File link.
Filing Form 4868 gives taxpayers until October 15 to file their 2020 tax return, but does not grant an extension of time to pay taxes due, according to the IRS website.
The IRS announced the decision to extend the deadline in March in March. The move provides more breathing room for taxpayers and the IRS alike to cope with changes brought on by the pandemic.
The IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement.
Taxpayers do not need to take any action to take advantage of the new deadline. Those who need more time beyond May 17 can request an extension until October 15.
Deadline For Individual Tax Returns
Usually, individuals must file their income tax returns by April 30 of the year following the year for which they are filing
If you are an employee, your employer is required to give you your T4 information slips by the last day of February. However, if you have all of your information early and you want to file electronically, the agency opens its NETFILE system in early February. Alternatively, you can acquire paper return packets from tax centre offices.

How Do I Prevent Fraud
It’s easy to procrastinate filing your taxes, but putting it off makes you more vulnerable to fraud. If a scammer gets hold of your Social Security number and you haven’t filed a tax return yet, they could easily file a fake one in your name to get a refund.
Scam calls are ubiquitous during tax season. Keep in mind that if the IRS needs to get in touch with a taxpayer, it sends a letter not an email, not a phone call, and definitely not a message over social media. Especially when it’s investigating cases of tax fraud or performing an audit.
Never return a phone call from someone claiming to be with the IRS. Instead, individuals should call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040, and businesses should call 800-829-4933.
The US Department of Justice says the IRS never discusses personal tax issues through unsolicited emails or texts, or over social media. Always be wary if you are contacted by someone claiming to be from the IRS who says you owe money.
If you receive an unexpected and suspicious email from the IRS, forward it to .
Accountants Concerned About Decision Not To Extend The Deadline
Ball says hes concerned about the CRAs decision to stick with the April 30 deadline this year.
The U.S. announced in March it would extend its federal folding and payment deadline from April 15 to May 17. And in Canada, Revenue Quebec said it will not start charging interest or imposing penalties until May 31, 2021.
Weve been discussing with the federal government for several months now, Ball says. But so far, Ottawa isnt budging.
Extending filing deadlines this year would risk interrupting essential credit and benefit payments for millions of Canadians payments on which thousands of Canadians rely, the CRA told Global News in an emailed statement.
The agency also said it is monitoring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country and has expanded payment arrangement options.
Still, Ball says many professional tax-fillers are under tremendous strain this year. On one hand, tax pros are facing an onslaught of new, pandemic-related tax and benefits provisions. The federal wage and rent subsidy programs for businesses, for example, require monthly applications, which is resulting in extraordinary workloads for many accountants, according to Ball.
On the other hand, some of the small and medium-sized accounting firms are facing staff shortages due to sickness, personal issues and stress, he says.
We were really hoping that the government would make an announcement to give people more time.

Other Tax Deadlines Today
The IRS pushed back a whole host of other tax deadlines to July 15, too. So, for example, you also have until today to file returns and pay taxes for:
Estimated taxes covering the first and second quarters of 2020
Payroll taxes for household employees and
Estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer taxes.
For other July 15 tax deadlines, see 12 Tax Deadlines for July 15 .
What Do I Need To File Taxes
Employees need W-2s and non-employees, including contractors or gig workers, need 1099s. These forms were either mailed to you in February or are available online through your payroll company.
Banks are also required to send 1099s to customers who received interest or dividends.
If you still don’t have your W-2 by the tax deadline, you can use the W-2 substitute, Form 4852, and estimate your wages and withheld taxes. Note that the IRS could delay your refund while verifying the information.
You’ll also need your adjusted gross income from the previous year to sign and file your tax return.

When Is The Tax Filing Start Date
The tax filing start date this year will be Friday, Feb. 12, 2021 a 2+ week delay from the typical start date. You can start working on your taxes sooner, however, software companies will hold your returns and cannot submit them to the IRS electronically via e-filing until the tax filing start date. Paper tax returns will begin processing at the same time. Your return will not be processed prior to, and you wont receive your refund until after your return is processed.
I would strongly caution to not file a return sooner than the tax filing start date, because tax software companies will often update their software to take in to account any IRS changes.

What If I Can’t Pay My Tax Bill
If you can’t afford to pay your tax bill in full on the deadline, don’t pull out your credit card or ignore the situation.
The IRS offers reasonable payment plans at much lower interest rates than most banks. You may even be able to settle the bill for less than you owe, called an offer in compromise, or request a deferment until you can make a payment. Offers in compromise and requests for deferment require additional paperwork and must be approved by the IRS.

Writing And Sending A Letter To The Irs
There is no way to send an online email or message to the IRS requesting an extension to file US taxes until the December 15 deadline. Instead, youll have to use the traditional route of writing and mailing a physical letter to the IRS. This process is according to the current regulations by the US Treasury.
Points to write in the letter:
- Your full name and Social Security Number
- Which tax return or documents and the year or tax period you need to get an extension for.
- A reason why the IRS should grant you the time to extend your tax filing obligation to December 15 . This reason could be that it takes extra time to collect expense and income documents to prepare your 2020 tax return. Especially since you live abroad as a US citizen, and communication and mailing delays could happen. Whatever is truthful and applies to your situation should work. Its crucial you come off confident and as a conscientious taxpayer.

Do I Have To File Taxes To Get My Stimulus Check
Yes, if you’re missing part or all of the first or second stimulus payment you qualify for, you’ll be able to claim it as a tax credit on your tax return.
If you owe taxes, the credit will reduce your bill and any remaining cash will come back to you as a refund. If you’re getting a refund already, the unpaid stimulus will be added to it. You don’t have to pay taxes on the stimulus amount itself.

What Someone Should Do If They Missed The May 17 Deadline To File And Pay Taxes
COVID Tax Tip 2021-69, May 18, 2021
The federal income tax deadline has passed for most individual taxpayers. However, some haven’t filed their 2020 tax returns or paid their tax due.
If an individual taxpayer is owed a refund, there’s no penalty for filing late. On the other hand, tax owed and not paid by May 17, 2021 is subject to penalties and interest .
Anyone who didn’t file and owes tax should file a return as soon as they can and pay as much as they can to reduce penalties and interest. Electronic filing options, including IRS Free File, are still available on IRS.gov through October 15, 2021, to prepare and file returns electronically.
Some taxpayers may have extra time to file their tax returns and pay any taxes due. This includes some disaster victims, taxpayers living overseas, certain military service members and eligible support personnel in combat zones.
Filing soon is very important because the late-filing and late-payment penalties on unpaid taxes add up quickly. However, in some cases, a taxpayer filing after the deadline may qualify for penalty relief. For those charged a penalty, they may contact the IRS by calling the number on their notice and explain why they couldn’t file and pay on time.
