Protect Yourself From Tax
Tax ID theft occurs when someone steals your personal information to file a tax return using your personal data. Usually, the fraudulent tax filer will use your Social Security number to file your return in order to collect a refund. To protect yourself from tax ID theft, you can obtain a six-digit Identity Protection PIN from the IRS. IP PINs are known only to you and the IRS so the IRS is able to confirm your identity when you file your return. Learn more about how the IP PIN works and how to apply.
What Happens If You File Your Taxes Late
If youve somehow forgotten to file your prior years taxes, youre not alone. It happens. Youll be wading into more dangerous waters if youve made a habit of not filing taxes at all for many, many years. A word of advice: dont drag your feet any longer since the longer you wait, the worse it will get for you. As the CRA site sets out in rather vague terms, you may have to pay a federal and provincial or territorial repeated failure to report income penalty. Youll obviously be in better stead had you not owed anything to the government, but either way, you could be in some major trouble. Should you not file taxes, the government may simply send you a bill based on whats known as a notional or involuntary assessment, which means that theyll take all the information available through income thats been reported to them and assess taxes and penalties These rarely turn out well for taxpayers.

Start by gathering all the required financial paperwork youll need to file. This includes any W-2 forms youve received from employers you worked for in the past year, as well as any Form 1099s you received for work with clients as a self-employed worker or for miscellaneous income you earned.
Other paperwork you may have and would need for your tax return includes interest you earned on bank accounts , investment income , student loan interest paid , mortgage statements of interest paid and information on contributions youve made to an IRA or a health savings account . While you can gather all the required paperwork for your tax return as you move through the e-filing process, collecting this information early can save you time later on.
Do You Even Have To File Taxes
Even if you dont have to file taxes, you might want to do it anyway: You might qualify for a tax break that could generate a refund. So give tax filing some serious consideration if:

Most corporations can file their return electronically using the Internet. It is mandatory for certain corporations with annual gross revenues that exceed $1 million.

We provide two different T2 returns:

Using Turbotax To File Your Taxes
TurboTax has a very straightforward questionnaire, which asks you about your sources of income and basic information to determine whether or not you can file for free.
If youre doing taxes for yourself, and only have one source of income, chances are high you can file for free. If you have multiple sources of income, like stocks or rental properties, or are self-employed, youll probably have to pay for TurboTaxs paid services, which cost up to $90. These paid services allow you to file your taxes, but dont provide additional support, which shouldnt be a problem if youve gone through this process before.
If you dont feel comfortable going through this process alone, you can pay $170 for full service, which connects you to a licensed tax expert to help you fill out the necessary paperwork.
All of these options are available if youd like to do your work in a web browser, but you can also download a version of TurboTax on Amazon, which runs as an app on your PC or Mac.

Understand How Your Taxes Are Determined
The government decides how much tax you owe by dividing your taxable income into chunks also known as tax brackets and each chunk gets taxed at the corresponding tax rate. The beauty of this is that no matter which bracket youre in, you wont pay that tax rate on your entire income.
The progressive tax system in the United States means that people with higher taxable incomes are subject to higher federal income tax rates, and people with lower taxable incomes are subject to lower federal income tax rates.
Choose A Netfile Certified Tax Software
You may have an accounting degree, but the CRA will still not allow you to go on its site and file your tax return through its NETFILE system. For that, youll need to choose from one of many online tax preparation software available. Naturally, to keep the riff raff from stealing any of your financial information, the CRA is pretty rigorous about kicking the tires of the companies that it allows to access NETFILE, the system used for filing to the government electronically. In fact, you can easily access a list of all certified software on the CRAs website. If youre at all concerned about bogus providers, use one of the links off the CRA page to link directly to one of the dozens of certified services.
Are all services the same? In one important way, they are. The certification process that the CRA subjects all electronic suitors to assure a uniformity in the results of the returns. In other words, no company offers a method to scoring a bigger refund than any other. They do, however, differ in other respects. Heres a few things worth checking on.

Gather Tax Filing Information
Youll need to do this whether youre hiring a tax preparer or doing the tax filing yourself. The goal is to gather proof of income, expenses that might be tax-deductible or win you a tax credit, and evidence of taxes you already paid throughout the year. Our tax prep checklist has more guidance, but heres a short version of what to round up:
Social Security numbers for yourself, as well as for your spouse and dependents, if any.
W-2 form, which tells how much you earned in the past year and how much you already paid in taxes.
1099 forms, which are a record that some entity or person not your employer gave or paid you money.
Retirement account contributions.
State and local taxes you paid.
Watch Out For The Upsell
The CRA divides its certified software categories into free products and products with pay what you want model, and paid products and products with free offerings. The second category is largely made up of companies that have a bare bones filing platform that is free, but once on their site, they may do everything they can to upsell you on paid products, and perhaps push you into thinking you need them when you might not. Youve been warned!
Paid products, like audit protection plans, an insurance that assures that should the CRA audit you, their company will serve as an intermediary, are more controversial. Full tax audits are exceedingly rare And as Toronto tax attorney David Rotfleisch told Global News, should you be audited, you might be better off hiring a bone fide accountant or tax attorney to help you rather than relying on someone with unspecified qualifications. Rotfleisch said:
The unknown is the level of expertise of the people providing the representation services,
He went on to point out if the representatives do not have the proper expertise, the taxpayers situation may very well be prejudiced.
